A tragic incident unfolded in Panama City Beach, Florida, claiming the life of a father during what was meant to be a joyful family holiday. Dakota Jones, 31, from Kansas City, was enjoying a final swim with his wife Skylar and their young daughter Brinnley when he became caught in a powerful rip current on Thursday, May 7. The family had travelled to Florida for their first vacation together as a trio, hoping to create cherished memories.

Describing the day, Skylar Biggs Jones reflected on the happiness they had experienced prior to the tragedy. “We were just going to dip our toes in one last time,” she recounted. The family had been enjoying their time at the beach, with smiling faces and laughter filling the air until their experience turned into a nightmare. First alerted to the rip current’s danger, she noted that at first, the surf didn’t seem particularly threatening, and the water was only up to Dakota’s waist.

Despite the beach being under a red flag warning, which indicates perilous swimming conditions, the group decided to continue enjoying the water. Skylar, however, grew concerned when the waves began to increase in strength, prompting her to warn Dakota, who was in the water alongside a family friend. Unfortunately, she was unable to reach him in time to prevent the unfolding tragedy, as the current proved overwhelming.

“The water was rising fast and it happened so, so quickly,” she told reporters. While the family friend managed to escape, Dakota was not as fortunate. Emergency services were alerted after receiving a distress call at approximately 6:00 PM local time, shortly after lifeguards had concluded their shifts for the day. Tragically, Dakota could not be revived at the scene and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The City of Panama City Beach has expressed deep condolences regarding the incident. Daryl Paul, the Beach Safety Director, issued a statement highlighting the dangers posed by rip currents, even to those who consider themselves strong swimmers. “This is a painful reminder of just how dangerous rip currents can be,” Paul noted. He urged beachgoers to remain vigilant about ocean conditions and to adhere to safety warnings to prevent similar tragedies.

In the wake of her husband’s death, Skylar shared the profound impact on their daughter, who now waits by the door as if expecting her father to return from work.
