In a delightful addition to their household, the Prince and Princess of Wales have welcomed a new puppy, Otto, into their family. The one-year-old cocker spaniel, whose mother is Orla, has been bringing both joy and a bit of chaos to the couple’s already busy life with their three children.

During a recent garden party at Buckingham Palace on 8 May, the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, shared her experiences of juggling family life with the demands of a young dog. With a hint of humour, she recounted an incident where Otto “chewed quite a lot the other day,” highlighting the playful challenges that come with raising a puppy.

Kate provided insights into their morning routine, indicating that keeping the puppy occupied is essential in preventing mischief. “The first thing we do in the morning is check, ‘Has anyone taken Otto out?'” she remarked, indicating that they actively prioritize Otto’s needs alongside those of their children.

The addition of Otto is not the couple’s first venture into the world of puppy parenthood. Their first dog, Lupo, a black cocker spaniel, was a wedding gift from Kate’s brother, James Middleton. Tragically, Lupo passed away in 2020, but the couple opted to welcome another cocker spaniel shortly thereafter. Orla, the family’s second dog, joined them around the same time.
Otto is particularly special as he is part of a litter that Orla gave birth to last year. In February, Princess Kate confirmed they had decided to keep one male puppy from the litter, although Otto only made his public debut recently, coinciding with a new portrait celebrating the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary.
The royal family’s appreciation for dogs is evident beyond just their own pets. James Middleton, who is an avid dog lover and breeder, had his own poignant moment recently. He attended a reception hosted by Queen Camilla at Clarence House on 12 May, where he interacted with a group of dogs from Medical Detection Dogs (MDD), a charity dedicated to training dogs in early cancer detection.
The work of MDD holds personal significance for both the Queen and James, as members of the royal family have faced health challenges in recent years, including treatments for cancer. The charity’s initiatives not only showcase the remarkable abilities of canine companions but also work towards advancements in technology that mimic these dogs’ diagnostic capabilities through AI.
At the reception, James Middleton was enthusiastic about supporting the charity’s mission. His dog food company, James & Ella, donated treats for the service dogs, emphasising his commitment to the cause. He remarked that it was “a real honour to be part of the charity,” underscoring the familial bond reflected in their shared passion for supporting canine welfare and health advocacy.
As Otto settles into his new home, it is clear that the Prince and Princess of Wales are embracing the joys and challenges of puppy parenthood. With a routine in place to balance the demands of family, work, and the spirited antics of a young dog, they are navigating this exciting phase with warmth and humour.
With the royal family’s ongoing dedication to animal welfare and community causes, their spotlight on Otto not only sheds light on their domestic life but also reinforces their connection to larger charitable endeavours, thereby inspiring others to appreciate the contributions of our four-legged friends. As they weave the love for their pets into their public personas, the royal couple continues to engage with their audience, showcasing the relatable aspects of family life in the spotlight.
