In a significant development following the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, federal prosecutors have officially filed charges against the operators of the vessel responsible for the disaster. The incident, which occurred in March 2024, resulted in the deaths of six construction workers and extensive damage that is estimated to exceed £5 billion.
The companies implicated in the indictment are Synergy Marine Pte Ltd, headquartered in Singapore, and its Indian counterpart, Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd, along with Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair, the technical supervisor. The legal actions taken against them are rooted in allegations that they made critical alterations to the ship’s fuel supply system and subsequently provided misleading information to regulatory authorities.

According to prosecutors, the MV Dali, a 900-foot container ship, collided with a pillar of the bridge, leading to its rapid collapse. This catastrophic event took place during the night and claimed the lives of workers who were engaged in maintenance tasks such as filling potholes.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche described the collapse as a “preventable tragedy of enormous consequence” during a press conference. He indicated that the indictment serves as an essential measure to hold accountable those responsible for disregarding maritime safety protocols that could have averted such a disaster.

The charges filed against Synergy and Nair encompass conspiracy, willfully failing to notify the U.S. Coast Guard of a known hazardous condition, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and delivering false statements. Furthermore, the companies face additional charges under the Clean Water Act, Oil Pollution Act, and Refuse Act for allegedly discharging pollutants into the Patapsco River—a consequence of the bridge’s demise.
Initial investigations suggest that the ship lost power on two separate occasions within a four-minute timeframe while departing from the port of Baltimore, en route to Sri Lanka. Allegations indicate that Synergy modified the ship’s design to prevent automatic power recovery that would have reinstated functionality after a blackout. This alteration is believed to have directly contributed to the second power loss, which ultimately led to the catastrophic impact with the bridge.
Following the incident, Nair reportedly made false statements to the National Transportation Safety Board regarding the ship’s fuel supply mechanisms, adding further complexity to the ongoing investigations.
In terms of financial repercussions, the Maryland Transportation Authority previously estimated the costs of reconstructing the Key Bridge at over £5 billion, with reconstruction efforts unlikely to conclude before 2030. These developments come amidst significant disruptions to Baltimore’s shipping operations, as the debris from the collapsed bridge obstructed the entrance and exit in one of the busiest habours on the East Coast, jeopardising the livelihoods of thousands of port workers.
Moreover, traffic diversions resulting from damage to I-695 have led to increased congestion on local roads, compounding the impact of the bridge’s collapse on the wider community.
In addition to facing criminal charges, Synergy and its affiliates have been embroiled in civil litigation since the event. Just days after the indictments were announced, Maryland’s Attorney General Anthony G. Brown revealed that the state had secured a final settlement of £2.25 billion with Synergy and Grace Ocean Private Limited, the vessel’s owner.
These ongoing legal proceedings and investigations underline the far-reaching implications of the disaster, from loss of life to economic impact, which will likely be felt for many years to come. As the case unfolds, attention will undoubtedly remain focused on accountability and the measures that could prevent a repeat of such a devastating incident in the future.
