A former passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship has shared his experience following a hantavirus outbreak that resulted in the deaths of three individuals on board. Jake Rosmarin, a Boston travel blogger, spoke about his quarantine while appearing on various television shows, including the Today show, from his isolation room at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He intends to adhere to the complete 42-day quarantine period as recommended by health officials.

During his interview on the Today show on 12 May, Rosmarin recounted the anxiety that enveloped the cruise ship amidst the outbreak, which crippled the holiday for all passengers involved. “I feel good right now. I’m happy to be in a place where I know we are well cared for,” Rosmarin expressed to co-hosts Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin. He further remarked on the access to medical attention, comforting himself in the knowledge that necessary care was available if required.

Rosmarin, alongside 15 other Americans from the MV Hondius, has been quarantined since the outbreak. Recalling his time on the ship, he described the emotional turbulence experienced by passengers after learning about the virus. “It was a scary time and I had a lot of up and down emotions, but I spent most of my time in my cabin,” he stated. He opted to confine himself to his room as a precautionary measure to maintain his health.
Reflecting on his initial perceptions of the outbreak, Rosmarin admitted, “I didn’t think anything was wrong until we found out that it was hantavirus, and that’s when I was scared.” The gravity of the situation heightened when authorities in Cape Verde denied the ship from docking. As uncertainty loomed over their fate, Rosmarin described the moment they reached the Canary Islands as a turning point, allowing him to feel a sense of relief as they finally disembarked.
The travel influencer also noted that during this crisis, images of him circulated online, leading people to erroneously presume that he had tested positive for the virus, which he clarified was not the case. In a bid to keep his spirits high while in isolation, Rosmarin plans to use a stationary bike and take advantage of delivery options for care packages.
In addition to his television appearances, Rosmarin has actively kept his followers updated via social media, posting a selfie from his quarantine room. “The repatriation flight was smooth, and I safely made it to the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha,” he shared on Instagram. He further expressed gratitude towards the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the local community for their support during this testing period.
As he settles into the quarantine routine, Rosmarin is committed to abiding by the complete duration of isolation as a measure to prevent any potential spread of the virus. With a clearer understanding of the seriousness of the hantavirus, he hopes to use this period not only to focus on his health but also to share more about his experience as the situation unfolds.
Rosmarin’s narrative sheds light on the unpredictable nature of travel during these unprecedented times and serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritising health and safety above all. His story stands as a testament to resilience in the face of adversity and the essential role of medical personnel in ensuring the wellbeing of individuals during health crises.
