A dramatic incident unfolded in Portland, Oregon, on May 11, 2026, when an SUV careened through the wall of a residential home, landing in the nursery of a mother and her infant. Fortunately, both the mother and her baby emerged unscathed, having narrowly avoided what could have been a devastating accident.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported that the crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. local time, specifically in the 5800-block of Southeast Jenne Road. Responding officers found a black SUV embedded in the side of the house, which suffered considerable structural damage, particularly in the area designated as the nursery.

Initial investigations reveal that the driver, a 47-year-old woman, was operating the vehicle southbound when she attempted to overtake a truck that was towing a trailer in a no-passing zone. In her attempt to return to her lane after spotting oncoming traffic, she sideswiped the truck and lost control. This resulted in the SUV veering down an embankment and crashing into the home.
A stroke of luck played a crucial role in preventing injury; the mother had taken her baby out of the nursery only minutes before the collision occurred. Caesar Fuerte, who was also in the home at the time of the accident, expressed immense relief, stating, “It was a miracle that nothing happened to them because the baby was there on the crib, like two, three, four minutes prior to that.” He added that he initially heard the sound of screeching tyres and rushed to ensure his mother was unharmed.
According to MCSO, while the mother and child escaped serious harm, the driver of the SUV was transported to a nearby hospital for assessment. Authorities did not observe any signs of impairment at the crash site; however, the driver is expected to face criminal charges for reckless driving and for endangering the lives of others.
The impact of the crash caused significant disturbances within the home, with the vehicle reportedly crashing directly into the crib after breaching the nursery wall. The sheer force of the collision emphasised the potential tragedy that had narrowly been avoided.
In light of the incident, the family displaced by the crash will receive temporary accommodation assistance from the American Red Cross. Meanwhile, local authorities closed Southeast Jenne Road in both directions between Southeast Circle Avenue and Southeast Baldry Street to facilitate an investigation into the accident. The timeline for reopening the road remains unclear as officials work to gather further details.
As investigations continue into this alarming incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the potential consequences of reckless driving. Community members will undoubtedly reflect on the events of that day, thankful that, despite the chaos and destruction, the mother and her child were spared from harm.
