Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are currently facing legal action from two Miami-Dade police officers regarding their portrayal in the recent Netflix crime thriller, ‘The Rip’. Officers Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana claim that their professional and personal reputations have been dramatically harmed due to the film’s representation of law enforcement operations related to a real-life narcotics investigation.

The movie, which debuted in January, is inspired by a significant incident that took place in June 2016, wherein officers uncovered nearly $22 million in cash concealed within a residential property in Miami Lakes, Florida. According to the lawsuit, the film’s director and writer, Joe Carnahan, drew from the experiences of a friend who served in the Miami-Dade police department during that time.
The officers allege that although they are not directly named in the film, it makes insinuations about misconduct, poor decision-making, and unethical practices that are inherently linked to their identities. Their complaint contends that such portrayals could lead the public to associate them with the negative actions depicted on screen.
“The Film and its promotional content imply misconduct, poor judgment, and unethical behaviour in connection with a real law-enforcement operation,” the lawsuit states. It also claims that the filmmakers incorporated distinctive elements of the actual cash seizure, which allowed those familiar with the case to link the fictional characters to the real officers involved.
Smith and Santana’s legal filing seeks damages for defamation, defamation by implication, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. They argue that the film’s narrative draws heavily from the authentic 2016 investigation, suggesting that it misrepresents the integrity of those directly involved.
In a twist, the complaint highlights that former Miami-Dade officer Christopher Casiano, whose experiences influenced the film, was not part of the actual investigation. The officers believe this misrepresentation further exacerbates the harm to their reputations, as Casiano was not even affiliated with the Narcotics Bureau during the event in question.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, representatives for both Damon and Affleck have yet to respond to requests for comment. Netflix is also not named in the lawsuit, and their representatives have not commented on the matter either.
The storyline of ‘The Rip’ revolves around two narcotics officers who stumble upon a substantial sum of money, triggering a plot filled with suspense as they grapple with the possibility of betrayal from colleagues. As tensions rise, Damon’s character is revealed to have acted covertly to identify the real villains within the force, a revelation that has drawn criticism from those who feel misrepresented by the film’s narrative.
The officers, who reportedly sent a cease-and-desist letter to the filmmakers in December 2025, expressed their distress over the film’s trailer and marketing prior to its release. Their complaint suggests ongoing concern about the negative portrayal and its impact on their professional lives.
Furthermore, following the release of the film, Smith and Santana claim they were approached by a colleague who had worked as a consultant on the project. This officer purportedly reached out on behalf of Joe Carnahan, extending an apology and offering to ‘make it right’ through potential roles or consulting opportunities in a future film – a gesture that has not alleviated the officers’ grievances.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the repercussions of ‘The Rip’ extend beyond the screen, presenting a complex intersection of entertainment and real-world implications for those whose lives inspire such narratives. It emphasises the potential consequences of artistic license, particularly when it involves sensitive subjects like law enforcement and public perception.
Both the film and the lawsuit highlight the challenges faced by those in law enforcement and the importance of accurately representing their experiences, particularly in a medium with widespread influence. The outcome of the lawsuit could set a significant precedent for how filmmakers depict real-life individuals in their works, especially in narratives inspired by true events.
