A remarkable story of perseverance and family bonding unfolded over Mother’s Day weekend as Rev. Dr. Carla Hunter Ramsey and her son, Wesley Ramsey IV, both celebrated their graduation from the esteemed Howard University. The ceremony took place on 9 May, resulting in a profound and emotional moment for the mother-son duo who have both accomplished significant academic milestones.

For Carla, 56, the achievement represents the realisation of a long-held dream harboured since her teenage years. While attending high school in Queens, New York, she aspired to enroll at Howard University; however, financial constraints thwarted her plans. Decades later, fate took a different turn when her son entered Howard as a student. This provided Carla with a unique opportunity when the university introduced an online Doctor of Ministry programme, allowing her to pursue her educational ambitions while balancing her career in external affairs and motherhood.

Reflecting on her experience, Carla remarked on how the passage of time felt illusory as she embarked on her studies. “Somehow time had collapsed,” she shared. “It didn’t even matter that I was my age, grown with a husband and kids. I felt once again like a young college person starting on a college campus.” Her sentiments underline the joy of pursuing education later in life, demonstrating that it is never too late to follow one’s dreams.

Wesley, 22, added another layer of significance to this unique graduation experience. After majoring in finance, he had missed the opportunity to graduate with his classmates the previous year due to incomplete credits. Fortunately, this timing meant he was able to share the milestone of graduation with his mother, an experience he acknowledged as deeply meaningful. “I can take my mum out to eat, write her a special note, or buy her flowers,” he explained. “But I can’t have both of us graduate at the same time, celebrating a moment that we both really want.”
Their simultaneous graduation from one of the nation’s leading historically Black universities speaks to the powerful bond they share as mother and son, as well as their parallel journeys through academia. Carla and Wesley’s association with Howard University is rooted not only in academic pursuit but also in shared experiences and familial support, making their graduation day all the more special.
As she dons her cap and gown, Carla envisions a future in which her Doctorate aids her lifelong commitment to supporting children in foster care. Having experienced adoption herself, she is driven by a personal mission to make a difference in the lives of those who have faced similar circumstances. Her work aligns with her academic pursuits, and she hopes to blend these two passions to foster positive social change.
Meanwhile, Wesley has dedicated himself to empowering youth in underserved communities as a financial literacy instructor, illustrating that education can be a tool for advocacy and transformation. His commitment reflects a desire to give back to society by equipping young individuals with the knowledge they need to navigate their financial futures.
Carla’s educational journey has not only fulfilled a personal aspiration, but it has also reinforced the importance of hope and resilience. “Sometimes your dreams are deferred until God gets you ready and God gets the place ready,” she articulated. This perspective enhances her narrative, encouraging others to remain patient and steadfast in the pursuit of their life’s ambitions.
In a world that often overlooks the intertwining of personal and professional aspirations, Carla and Wesley’s story serves as a reminder of the power of family support and the lasting impact of education. Their experience embodies the spirit of perseverance, showcasing that dreams, regardless of how long they may be delayed, are attainable through dedication and resilience. This Mother’s Day weekend, Carla and Wesley did not just graduate; they celebrated a shared journey towards success, marking a significant chapter in their family’s legacy.
