Actor and comedian Martin Short has spoken candidly about his family’s experience with grief following the tragic death of his daughter, Katherine Short. Katherine, who struggled with severe mental health issues, died by suicide at the age of 42 in February of this year.
In a recent interview on CBS News Sunday Morning, Short, who is 76 years old, described the loss as an “unimaginable nightmare” for the family. He revealed the deep emotional toll that Katherine’s battle with mental health had taken on her and the family. “My daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, and other challenges,” Short explained. “She did her utmost until she couldn’t any longer.”

The coroner’s office in Los Angeles has confirmed that Katherine’s passing was due to suicide. In a statement released shortly after her death, the Short family expressed profound sorrow, saying, “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine Short was a licensed clinical social worker, dedicating herself to the welfare of others through her work in private practice and at Amae Health, a clinic that focuses on community outreach, family support groups, and psychotherapy. She completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies from New York University in 2006, later earning a master’s in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.
The struggle with mental health issues not only affected Katherine but has been a recurring theme in Martin Short’s life, particularly following the death of his beloved wife, Nancy Dolman, who succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2010 at the age of 58. The couple shared three children—Katherine, Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36—who they adopted together.

In reflecting on his daughter’s struggles, Short emphasised the necessity of understanding mental health as a serious illness, akin to physical diseases, which can, at times, be terminal. He stated, “The understanding is that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases. Sometimes, with diseases, they are terminal.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Martin Short is set to feature in an upcoming Netflix documentary titled *Marty, Life Is Short*, which is scheduled for release on May 12. The film aims to provide an intimate portrait of Short’s life and career, showcasing his many roles and the vibrant personality that has made him a beloved figure in entertainment.
Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan, the documentary will utilise rare archival footage in combination with new interviews. The trailer suggests that it will also explore some of the personal losses Short has faced over the years.
Tragically, alongside the memory of his daughter, the documentary is dedicated to actress Catherine O’Hara, who passed away on January 30 at the age of 71. O’Hara worked closely with Short for many years, further enhancing the documentary’s emotional depth.
As part of his message to the public, Martin Short underscored the importance of mental health awareness and support. He urged anyone struggling with mental health issues or emotional distress to seek help, providing the resource of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline as a crucial support system.
The family’s experience highlights not only the difficulties associated with mental health challenges but also the enduring need for compassion and understanding in society regarding these issues. As Martin Short navigates this period of profound loss, his openness may serve as a source of strength to others undergoing similar struggles.
