A former firefighter has been shot by police in New Jersey following an armed confrontation on April 29, 2023. Brian Lanzim, 37, reportedly travelled from Maine to South Toms River, New Jersey, while armed and wearing a bulletproof vest. The trip was allegedly prompted by a breakup with his ex-girlfriend over a FaceTime call, which led him to threaten her family in an attempt to gain custody of their two children.

Lanzim, who previously served 18 years as a firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT), had been living in Maine for a new job prior to the incident. According to reports, the relationship ended abruptly when his ex-girlfriend decided to end things during a video call. Following this, Lanzim allegedly made a series of threatening communications, which prompted her to seek a temporary restraining order against him.

In the lead-up to his trip, Lanzim reportedly sent alarming messages to his ex-girlfriend. According to statements obtained by local news outlets, he allegedly said, “You don’t know crazy yet,” and sent threats towards her father, including that he would “take him out” if he was present. Other messages suggested that Lanzim intended to harm anyone who stood between him and his children, stating, “If I can’t have you, no one can.”
As Lanzim made his way toward South Toms River, police were alerted to the situation by his ex-girlfriend. It was reported that Lanzim was “ready for war,” carrying two firearms, a bulletproof vest, and a significant amount of ammunition. According to Ocean County prosecutors, he had “15 large-capacity magazines” in his vehicle, suggesting a serious threat to the safety of her family.
The authorities attempted to intervene when Lanzim arrived at the home of his ex-girlfriend’s parents. It was reported that he drove his vehicle onto the lawn and approached the officers on the scene. At this point, officers took cover as Lanzim attempted to enter the residence. In a tense moment, South Toms River Sergeant Muhammad Ali shot Lanzim in the pelvis and hand as he tried to gain entry. Following the shooting, Lanzim was disarmed and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that as police confronted him, Lanzim was visibly distressed, reportedly crying and declaring his love for his ex-girlfriend and their children. The dramatic confrontation has since raised questions about his mental health, with his defence attorney indicating that Lanzim had been struggling with bipolar disorder and was undergoing psychiatric treatment prior to the incident.
As a result of the May 29 confrontation, Lanzim now faces multiple serious charges, including three counts of attempted murder, as well as charges for unlawful possession of weapons and making terroristic threats. Following his release from the hospital on May 4, he was taken into custody at Ocean County Jail, where he is held without bail while awaiting further court proceedings.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with domestic violence, as well as the importance of seeking help in such situations.
