The bodies of Travis Grant, 41, Kimberly Grant, 42, and Sharon Grant, 66, were discovered on Thursday evening, May 7, during a welfare check conducted by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). According to the BCSO, all three victims suffered gunshot wounds. Authorities believe they may have been deceased for several days prior to their discovery.
Star Grant, the couple’s teenage daughter, was reportedly missing at the time of the welfare check. On May 8, law enforcement officials revealed that she had been located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, accompanied by Devan Loving. The two were found in a hotel room after police spotted a car associated with the teenager outside the establishment.

The exact nature of the relationship between Grant and Loving remains unclear. Both individuals are facing charges of first-degree murder as well as felony conspiracy to commit murder. Notably, Star Grant is being processed as an adult for these charges.

BCSO Major John Ledford stated during a press conference that detectives were dispatched to Gatlinburg to interview the suspects. The information gathered during these interviews subsequently led to the charges. Meanwhile, the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
Initial requests for welfare checks had been made on May 4 and 6, prior to the police’s intervention on May 7. Buncombe County Sheriff’s Captain Dustan Auldredge explained that officers did not have sufficient evidence to force entry into the home during the earlier checks. It was only on the third visit that circumstances warranted entry. “A lot of facts became clear at the time of the third welfare check that painted a picture of exigency to enter the residence,” Auldredge noted.
Reports indicate that Star Grant was adopted by Travis Grant in 2019. As the investigation unfolds, relatives have revealed concerns over Star’s involvement with an unnamed man, who allegedly provided her with a burner phone for private communication. Reports suggest that Travis attempted to file a restraining order against this individual, but it is not confirmed whether Devan Loving is the same person.
Following the incident, Star Grant is currently being held at the Sevier County Juvenile Detention Center, while Loving is in custody at the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office. Both will soon face an extradition hearing in Tennessee before being transferred to Buncombe County for further proceedings.
The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has expressed condolences to the families affected by this tragic event. They also praised the dedication of their deputies and detectives, who have been working tirelessly to ensure the investigation proceeds smoothly, aiming to provide some closure for those impacted by the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, queries have been directed to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, and Gatlinburg Police Department for additional details regarding this disturbing case. The community is left in shock, grappling with the implications of such a violent outcome within the family home.
