A remarkable blood drive recently took place in Flagstaff, Arizona, to commemorate the life and legacy of Paula Off, a woman who selflessly donated blood over 300 times throughout her life. Her commitment to helping others was deeply influenced by personal experiences, notably the medical needs of her daughter and father, both of whom required numerous blood transfusions in their battles with illness.

Paula’s journey as a blood donor began with her father, who inspired her as a teenager to appreciate the importance of giving blood. He had served in the military and believed that donating blood was a vital way to contribute to the community. Their first experience together saw them racing to complete their donations, forever marking that moment as a catalyst for Paula’s lifelong dedication to this noble cause.

Philip Off, Paula’s husband, reflects on their shared struggles with health, recalling how their daughter only survived for a mere four and a half months due to her illness. Tragically, her father subsequently faced aplastic anaemia, a serious condition that often requires frequent transfusions for survival. These personal challenges fuelled Paula’s determination to assist others in need of blood donations.
In 2025, Paula received a grave diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, which she fought bravely until her passing just five months later. Philip recalls that even in her final moments, Paula’s thoughts were with others, with her only regret being her inability to continue donating blood. This spirit of selflessness and compassion is what has now been honoured through community efforts in her name.
During the recent blood drive, local residents were inspired by Paula’s story to rally together and donate blood. Carina Fors, a representative from the Vitalant blood bank, organised the event, motivated by Paula’s incredible legacy of service. Fors stated, “Even if one extra person from the eligible population donates blood, it helps immensely to reduce shortages.”
Vitalant had previously celebrated Paula’s milestone of 300 donations on their social media, honouring her long-lasting commitment. The organisation highlighted Paula’s initial experience with blood donation and mentioned how that formative moment fostered her passion for helping others through such vital acts of kindness.
At the blood drive, Philip took the first spot in line to donate, expressing profound pride in continuing his wife’s legacy. “It’s an honour and a pleasure to be able to do this,” he remarked, underlining his intent to persist in blood donations regularly. In an effort to uphold Paula’s spirit, he affirmed, “This will be marked on my calendar just as it was for her. I will make it a priority.”
The urgency surrounding blood donations has recently grown, as the American Red Cross reported a significant decline in the national blood supply, falling by approximately 35% within a month. Dr. Courtney Lawrence, the executive medical director for the Red Cross, emphasised the critical nature of each blood donation, stating, “Every person’s blood donation can help save lives — plus you help ease the tremendous burden on our doctors and nurses, allowing them to focus on caring for patients.”
Individuals interested in lending their support through blood donation are encouraged to find local drives or make appointments via the Red Cross website, furthering efforts to alleviate the ongoing shortage. This collective endeavour, inspired by Paula Off, showcases how one person’s legacy can ignite a community’s commitment to lifesaving activities. The heartfelt tribute not only honours Paula’s memory, but also serves as a reminder of the impact that each individual can have through altruistic acts.
