In a compelling journey of resilience, 60-year-old Addist Bennett has transformed his life after facing unexpected challenges that led to homelessness. The Arizona resident’s ordeal began when he suffered a painful hernia that prevented him from continuing in his job, ultimately resulting in the loss of both his employment and his home.

Reflecting on his previous circumstances, Bennett remarked, “I just never thought my life would be reduced to [being homeless], pushing a cart.” Dealing with a debilitating condition, he faced intense pain from the hernia, which was so severe at times that it caused him to lose consciousness. One particularly harrowing incident occurred in a public stairwell, where he woke up disoriented and discovered that his possessions, including his wallet and laptop, had been taken.

Despite these setbacks, Bennett was determined to find a way to rebuild his life. He described his experience as one where he had to muster the strength to “get back up and keep going.” Over the years, he made concerted efforts to recover from his situation, taking what he called “small steps” toward regaining stability.

One pivotal moment came when he volunteered at the Salvation Army, which subsequently connected him with Circle the City, a supportive organisation focused on aiding individuals experiencing homelessness. Realising the importance of education in redefining his future, Bennett enrolled at Gateway Community College to study HVAC, controls, and security. His commitment to furthering his education is set to pay off later this year when he will graduate with an associate’s degree, an accomplishment marking a significant milestone as it will be his first college degree.

In addition to his studies, Bennett has secured a position as a surveillance technician with Johnson Controls, further cementing his reintegration into the workforce. He has quickly adapted to his new role and is optimistic about the future. His determination is evident as he states, “I’m going to survive and grow, no matter what happens.”
