As the cost of living continues to climb across the UK, one charity worker from Kilmarnock is taking proactive steps to secure his financial future. Shabaz Khan, 31, has turned to entrepreneurialism, launching a vending machine business that has grown rapidly in just over a year.

Khan’s journey began earlier this year, when he became increasingly aware that his salary was not keeping pace with rising expenses. “The price of everything is just going up,” he remarked. This realisation drove him to seek additional income sources that required less direct involvement, such as vending machines and laundromats.
His interest was piqued after a conversation with a friend who owned a vending machine. This encouragement prompted Khan to take a risk—one that has since paid off. Eight months after that initial discussion, he purchased a refurbished vending machine, taking the first step on what would become a steep learning curve.
“I initially thought that this doesn’t seem like a difficult job to do,” he said, full of optimism. Starting with one machine, Khan quickly found his business thriving. Within the first month, he secured a second location. Today, just a year later, his operation spans six locations, and he is actively seeking to expand further.
The financial aspects of his venture have proven equally encouraging. Khan invested approximately £4,000 in his first vending machine and recouped that investment within ten months. He now anticipates earning around £58,000 in total revenue this year, with an estimated profit of £27,000.
Khan’s approach to running the business is strikingly efficient, requiring only four to five hours of his time each week. He manages to refill his machines in short bursts, often during his lunch breaks or before and after work. “Filling a vending machine takes less than ten minutes,” he explained, highlighting the feasibility of this side business alongside his full-time role.
Despite his success, Khan has emphasised the challenges he faced during his entrepreneurial journey. “It was a steep learning curve,” he said, acknowledging that he made several mistakes along the way. He has since become skilled in managing stock levels and understanding which products are most popular with customers.
Looking ahead, Khan has ambitious plans for the future of his vending business. “I aim to acquire more machines, and right now, all my profits are being reinvested back into the business,” he stated, reflecting a commitment to growth. However, he remains grounded, insisting that he has no intention of making this venture his primary occupation. “My full-time job is still my main focus. I love what I do,” he added, underscoring his passion for his charity work.
Khan’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the resilience many individuals are displaying in the face of economic challenges. He illustrates how a combination of innovation, dedication, and a willingness to learn can lead to success, even in difficult times.
As the cost of living crisis continues to impact households across the UK, Khan’s experience could serve as a blueprint for others seeking similar financial relief. His venture not only provides an additional income stream but also represents a proactive response to the pressing economic pressures facing many today.
