YouTube influencer Ruhi Cenet has recently addressed concerns regarding his attendance at a wedding in Istanbul, following his time aboard the MV Hondius cruise, during which a hantavirus outbreak was reported. Cenet, who participated in the cruise starting on April 1 from Ushuaia, Argentina, faced intense scrutiny after attending the wedding on May 3, just as the World Health Organization (WHO) began investigating a potential outbreak linked to the vessel.

The incident escalated when a 70-year-old Dutch man tragically passed away on April 11. Initially, the ship’s captain reassured passengers that the death was due to “natural causes,” asserting that the individual’s prior health issues were non-infectious. Cenet captured the captain’s remarks on video, which have since contributed to the unsettling atmosphere among passengers as they continued their voyage without heightened precautions.
Cenet stated, “Whatever health issues he was struggling with, I’m told by the doctor, were not infectious, so the ship is safe.” However, passengers, including Cenet, were left ill-informed regarding the unfolding health crisis. He described the experience as “very scary” and expressed regret that they were not better prepared for a situation that rapidly became serious.
Following the death, Cenet reported that passengers continued to socialise and dine together without any protective measures for a considerable period. “They didn’t take any caution for a solid 12 days,” he reflected, highlighting a lack of awareness that ultimately left them vulnerable. Cenet isolated himself with his cameraman towards the end of the voyage, but many others did not take similar actions despite the evident risks.
The Dutch man’s body was removed from the ship on April 24, coinciding with Cenet’s disembarkation in St. Helena. Cenet expressed regret about arriving on the island after the death, especially considering its remote location with limited medical facilities. He commented on the potentially dangerous interactions between disembarking passengers and the island’s residents, stating, “This is one of my regrets because the island is the most remote one, and they don’t have enough medical centres, enough doctors.”
Compounding the situation, the deceased man’s wife began experiencing illness shortly after the incident and later died on April 26 after travelling to South Africa with Cenet. Upon his return to Turkey, Cenet initially received information that he would not require quarantine, provided he exhibited no symptoms. Nonetheless, he announced that he would voluntarily self-isolate “just in case.”
As a result of the ongoing situation, by May 2, health authorities in South Africa reported a third fatality linked to the outbreak. On May 3, as Cenet attended the wedding, the WHO confirmed it was investigating eight suspected cases connected to the cruise, including three deaths. Among the confirmed cases, six were identified as infections of the Andes virus, a strain known to be transmitted between humans through close contact.
Hantavirus is typically contracted through interaction with rodents rather than human-to-human transmission; however, the WHO has indicated that certain strains, including the Andes virus, can spread among people, particularly in situations involving prolonged interaction such as caregiving. Symptoms can develop one to eight weeks post-exposure and include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, cough, and breathing difficulties, leading to more severe complications like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
The cruise ship MV Hondius has since departed from Cape Verde, continuing its journey toward Spain’s Canary Islands. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing investigations and health monitoring as public health officials work to manage the fallout from the outbreak. Cenet’s experience reveals the often overlooked implications of health crises, particularly on communal settings like cruise ships, where information dissemination and disaster readiness are paramount for passenger safety.
