The card, sent with a delightful twist, was a highlight of a comedic sketch titled “A Very Special Delivery” which aired during a celebration at the Royal Albert Hall on 8 May.
The production was crafted by BBC Studios’ esteemed Natural History Unit and featured a whimsical relay team of animals that helped transport the important letter from Balmoral Castle to London. The sketch charmingly reflects the close relationship between the monarch and Attenborough, with the King expressing his affection and admiration through his handwritten message.
At the beginning of the skit, audiences were treated to a scene of King Charles seated at a desk within the serene surroundings of Balmoral Castle. Accompanying the King was Moley, Queen Camilla’s dog, who made a delightful cameo as part of the narrative. In keeping with tradition, King Charles took the time to pen a heartfelt message wishing Attenborough well on his momentous milestone.
The animals’ adventure commenced as a border collie, acting as the courier, set out with the letter in its mouth. However, the journey proved somewhat challenging when its vehicle was hindered by a fallen tree. Undeterred, the energetic pooch leapt over the obstruction and continued on its quest to deliver the precious letter.
Encounters along the way included a cliff that presented a dead end for the collie. This prompted a quick change in strategy, with a bird stepping up to take over the delivery responsibilities. As the relay continued, a variety of animals including a squirrel, geese, an otter, a swan, a fox, and a deer each played their role in ensuring the letter was delivered safely to Attenborough.
The comical escapade concluded when an owl dramatically dropped the now dirtied envelope into Attenborough’s mail slot, resulting in laughter from the audience present at the celebration. As the skit wrapped up, a camera captured Sir David in the crowd, visibly amused while holding the card.
The card from King Charles conveyed heartfelt sentiments. It read, “Dear David, My wife and I are delighted to learn that you will be celebrating your one hundredth birthday on May 8th and wanted to send you our warmest congratulations on such a special occasion.”
