Colby Stevenson, an accomplished Olympic skier, took time to reflect on a pivotal moment in his life as he marked ten years since suffering a severe traumatic brain injury and a shattered skull in a car accident. The 28-year-old athlete shared his journey of recovery and triumph on social media, celebrating what he calls his “rebirth day.”

On May 8, Stevenson posted a series of poignant images on Instagram that highlighted both the crash and his subsequent recovery. The images painted a powerful picture of resilience, showcasing the injuries he endured, the physical and emotional battles he faced, and the remarkable accomplishments he has achieved since that fateful day.
In his post, Stevenson expressed gratitude for his life and the lessons he has learned through his struggles. He wrote, “I haven’t taken a moment for granted since. Life is a spiritual journey with highs and lows, but your attitude shapes the outcome.” He encouraged his followers to follow their instincts, surround themselves with uplifting individuals, and pursue their dreams passionately—a philosophy he has embraced wholeheartedly since the accident.
The accident occurred nearly a decade ago when Stevenson was driving nearly 500 miles home after participating in a freeski event at Mount Hood, Oregon. Tired from the competitions, he lost concentration at the wheel, causing the vehicle to crash. His friend, John Michael Fabrizi, who was with him and had sustained a leg injury during the event, miraculously escaped unharmed. In contrast, Stevenson’s condition was dire when emergency services arrived; he had suffered over 30 fractures to his skull and experienced significant swelling in his brain, leading to a medically induced coma.
After waking from the coma, Stevenson’s initial fears centred around the potential end of his skiing career. With no fallback plan, he was determined to return to the slopes he loved. Remarkably, just five months after his accident, he achieved a major milestone by winning a World Cup event in slopestyle in Seiser Alm, Italy, in January 2017. Reflecting on that moment, he recounted the sense of disbelief at just being alive, let alone achieving such a prestigious title.
Since that remarkable comeback, Stevenson has continued to defy expectations, culminating in a silver medal win for Team USA in the Men’s Freeski Big Air event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. This achievement highlighted not only his physical talent but also his mental fortitude. In a sport that demands both skill and courage, Stevenon’s journey exemplifies triumph over adversity.
In his recent reflections, Stevenson reiterated the importance of cherishing life and maintaining an optimistic outlook, despite challenges. “I learned that life is a gift — fragile, unpredictable, and never promised,” he remarked in his post. He encouraged his followers to embrace love, adventure, and the power of the mind in manifesting a desired life.
Stevenson’s journey resonates deeply with many and serves as an inspiration to those grappling with their own hardships. His narrative promotes the idea that one can indeed overcome life’s obstacles, urging others not to let their past define their present. He emphasized the importance of living in the moment and advocating for one’s passions—an ethos that he embodies every day.
As he shares his story of recovery and strength ten years after such a traumatic event, Colby Stevenson remains a beacon of hope and determination. He not only celebrates his survival but also invites others to join him in cherishing every day and pursuing their dreams relentlessly. Through his journey, Stevenson hopes to inspire as many people as possible to take charge of their lives and not shy away from challenges.
