A 36-year-old former teacher has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for engaging in sexual relations with a high school student and providing the minor with marijuana. Michelle Mercogliano, who was a teacher at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of sexual intercourse with a student, corruption of a minor, and unlawful contact with a minor.

The incidents, which came to light in early 2025, involved a 16-year-old student, as documented in a criminal complaint filed by the Tredyffrin Township Police Department. According to authorities, Mercogliano and the student began a sexual relationship in February of that year. It was reported that she also supplied the minor with marijuana during this time.
Mercogliano entered her guilty plea during a court appearance at the Chester County Court of Common Pleas on May 1. In accordance with her plea agreement, several charges were dropped, reducing the potential length of her sentence. While the minimum sentence for the sexual intercourse and unlawful contact counts could have amounted to 33 months, she will only serve a total of 15 months.
Once she completes her prison term, Mercogliano will be under the supervision of a probation officer for a minimum of 80 months. She has also been classified as a Tier II Sex Offender. As part of her conviction, she forfeited her teaching license and will not be permitted to work with children during the probationary period.
The Tredyffrin/Easttown School District released a statement confirming that Mercogliano had only been employed at Conestoga High School for about a year when the offences were committed. Superintendent Richard Gusick expressed the district’s commitment to ensuring a safe educational environment for students and reassured the community that such conduct is unacceptable.
Prosecutors have emphasised the importance of maintaining trust in the teacher-student relationship, with Chester County District Attorney Christopher L. de Barrena-Sarobe stressing that inappropriate behaviour cannot be tolerated. “Parents and students should be able to trust their teachers,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of the allegations against Mercogliano.
The investigation into Mercogliano’s actions was initiated shortly after the misconduct was reported to law enforcement. Upon her cooperation with the authorities, she was charged with a total of 62 counts, including 40 counts of institutional sexual assault and 20 counts of endangering the welfare of a child. However, following her guilty plea, most of these charges were discarded.
