Anuradha Narinesingh, a resilient mother from Sugar Land, Texas, has bravely battled cancer on two occasions, profoundly impacting her perspective on life and self-care. Her most recent challenge began when she was just two months pregnant with her fifth child and received the shocking diagnosis of breast cancer, a situation she never anticipated after having previously overcome thyroid cancer a decade earlier.

At 38 years old, Narinesingh’s life took a dramatic turn after she learned she was facing stage 1 invasive ductal carcinoma—a form of breast cancer known for its aggressive nature. The diagnosis was overwhelming. “I had so many questions in my mind,” Narinesingh admitted. “Why is this happening to me?” The news left her reeling, particularly as she was still adjusting to life with her four other sons: Arune, 10; Aarav, 8; Arvinda, 6; and Arvaan, 2.

The gravity of her situation weighed heavily on Narinesingh the moment she received the news. “I was bawling,” she recalled, expressing her immediate concern for her unborn child rather than her own well-being. With her mind racing with thoughts about the health of her baby, her focus shifted from survival to the welfare of her child. “I was trying to do everything possible for him to be healthy,” she shared.
Given that she was in her first trimester, chemotherapy was not an option immediately. However, as her pregnancy progressed, she had to make the difficult decision to undergo a unilateral mastectomy. “I was really scared,” Narinesingh confessed, concern for her baby’s safety looming large in her mind. On the day of the surgery, she found solace in prayer, placing her trust in the medical team tasked with her care.
Fortunately, doctors later determined that she would not require radiation therapy. However, the challenges continued as she began chemotherapy just months before her due date. Despite the hardships, Narinesingh welcomed her youngest son, Arthav, who was born healthy in October 2024, with immense relief. “I remember feeling such relief when I had him,” she recalled.
Now, as a mother to five young boys, Narinesingh faces the ongoing struggle of balancing her family life with her health challenges. The medication she takes to combat hormone-related issues leaves her grappling with brain fog and hot flashes associated with a medically-induced menopause. Yet her commitment to her children’s well-being remains unwavering. “I remind myself that I am the most important person to my kids, so I need to be strong for them,” she stated.
Having emerged from her traumatic experiences, Narinesingh has adopted a new outlook on life, seeing challenges as temporary phases rather than defining moments. “This stage, it’s just a season of your life. Cancer doesn’t define you,” she said. Moreover, her experience has diminished her fear of other aspects of life. “I used to fear things like going on amusement rides, but now I’m like, ‘You beat cancer. What the hell is wrong with you? Get over this fear!'” This shift in mentality demonstrates her newfound strength and resilience.
In addition to navigating her health and family life, Narinesingh is making a conscious effort to prioritise self-care. “Cancer definitely made me stronger and more vocal about my needs,” she acknowledged. Understanding the importance of taking time for herself away from her children has become a fundamental component of her recovery process.
Since overcoming her health battles, Narinesingh has seized opportunities for self-care, including taking two cruises with her mother, who resides in her home country of Trinidad and Tobago. For Valentine’s Day, she even celebrated her journey by writing herself a card and treating herself to flowers, a gesture that underscored her commitment to honour herself. “I wanted to celebrate myself,” she said, embracing the significance of self-love amidst her challenges.
Anuradha Narinesingh’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience that can be found in the face of adversity. Despite the trials she has faced, her journey reflects a deeply rooted commitment to family, self-care, and living life to the fullest, offering inspiration to others navigating similar paths.
