Investigation Underway After Video Surfaces of a Man Chucking a Rock at a Critically Endangered Seal

Authorities in Hawaii have launched an investigation following a disturbing incident involving a Hawaiian monk seal, a species classified as critically endangered. A bystander captured video footage that shows a man hurling a large rock at a seal swimming near the shoreline. This alarming event occurred on the morning of 5 May in Lahaina, Maui.

The man, who has been identified by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) as a 37-year-old from Seattle, was filmed taking aim at the seal’s head with a rock roughly the size of a coconut. Local resident Kaylee Schnitzer, 18, was present during the incident and expressed her shock. “What are you doing?” she can be heard exclaiming in the video.

According to Schnitzer, after confronting the individual, he displayed a blatant disregard for the animal’s safety, reportedly stating, “I don’t care, I’m rich,” and adding that he would pay any fines he might incur as a result of his actions. Schnitzer recounted her dismay at his attitude, stating, “I turned around and told him, ‘You can’t do that.’”

In response to the video, the DLNR confirmed that officers from the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and Maui Police were dispatched to investigate. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials matched the suspect’s description and detained him for questioning. He opted not to provide a statement and requested legal counsel. As of now, he has not been formally charged, and the DLNR has declined to release further details about his identity due to the ongoing investigation.

The Hawaiian monk seal, indigenous only to the Hawaiian Islands, is facing an alarming decline, with approximately 1,600 individuals left in existence. This species is not only protected by the Endangered Species Act but also by state laws prohibiting any form of disturbance or harm. Chief Jason Redulla of DOCARE noted that the federal authorities, specifically the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will be taking charge of the investigation due to the federal protections concerning marine mammals.

Redulla further highlighted the serious legal implications surrounding such acts against monk seals, as violations can lead to substantial fines, sometimes amounting to thousands of dollars. He urged the public to behave responsibly and to respect the guidelines in place aimed at protecting these vulnerable marine animals.

This incident not only raises concerns about human-animal interactions in Hawaii but also echoes recent troubling reports from O‘ahu, where members of the public have been seen violating barriers set up to protect a mother monk seal and her pup. Just days prior, a similar breach occurred near Kaiwi (RK96), a 15-year-old monk seal, which was raising its newborn.

“The life of this pup is crucial right now,” Redulla stated, cautioning that human interference could provoke maternal aggression. He pointed to a previous encounter in 2022 when a swimmer suffered serious injuries following a confrontation with a mother seal.

Critics, including those who witnessed the incident, have voiced their frustration over the lack of respect shown towards Hawaii’s wildlife. Schnitzer emphasised the need for visitors to honour the local culture and environment. “Respect for the land and the animals is essential when you come here,” she declared.

The incident has sparked wider conversations regarding the treatment of wildlife in Hawaii, with many residents advocating for greater awareness and adherence to protective laws for endangered species. The shocking episode highlights the delicate balance between human activity and the preservation of Hawaii’s unique ecosystems.
