In the spotlight once more, reality television star Taylor Frankie Paul took to Instagram on 6 May to mark the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month. In a thought-provoking post, she shared an AI-generated image of herself gazing into a mirror, prompting reflections on her mental health journey amidst a tumultuous period in her life.

The 31-year-old influencer’s post featured a striking contrast: from the back, she appeared in soiled clothing and covered in bandages, while her mirror reflection portrayed a perfectly made-up version of herself. Accompanying the poignant image was a caption that read: “It’s mental health awareness month. I’ve had to be humbled to learn some experiences need to be lived through to understand. Which category should we start with?”

Her message resonated with many, drawing supportive comments from followers, including her co-star on ‘Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,’ Jessi Draper, who remarked, “This 100%❤️.”

Paul’s introspection comes at a challenging time, as she and her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen, recently received mutual protective orders during a court hearing on 30 April. This legal hearing primarily addressed their custody arrangement for their two-year-old son, Ever. It marked the first public appearance of the former couple since multiple domestic violence investigations were opened against them earlier this year.
During the court proceedings, Commissioner Russell Minas highlighted the volatility in their interactions, stating, “I’m finding that there’s been violence both ways between these parties.” He issued a caution, telling them that they must avoid being in the same location for extended periods, as it has been known to lead to violence. The commissioner also remarked, “You’re linked together for the remainder of your lives. This is your legacy.”
As part of the ruling, Mortensen was granted custody of Ever with specific visitation rights for Paul. The arrangement allowed her up to eight hours of supervised visitation each week, a directive issued by the court just prior to the recent hearing. The next court date is scheduled for 1 June, during which further recommendations regarding parenting time will be reviewed.
The backdrop to these protective orders is fraught with allegations of domestic violence against both parties. In February, police investigations were initiated following claims of violent altercations between Paul and Mortensen. The Draper City Police Department and the West Jordan Police Department looked into these allegations. However, as of April, neither the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office nor the Draper City Prosecutor’s Office proceeded with charges against Paul, citing a lack of evidence sufficient to meet the burden of proof.
The situation was exacerbated by an earlier incident in 2023, where Paul reportedly faced legal repercussions following an alleged domestic violence episode with Mortensen. In that instance, she was accused of throwing metal chairs at him while their then-five-year-old daughter was present. Paul ultimately pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, while additional charges were dismissed.
The case drew significant media attention in March, particularly after TMZ released footage purportedly showing a heated confrontation between Paul and Mortensen. The video allegedly captured moments where Paul could be seen yelling at Mortensen and engaging in a physical altercation while a child was heard crying in the background. Following the emergence of this footage, ABC swiftly cancelled Paul’s pre-recorded season of ‘The Bachelorette’, just days ahead of its intended premiere.
Furthermore, the ongoing legal disputes impacted the production of the fifth season of ‘Mormon Wives’, which faced interruptions in March after several cast members expressed their unwillingness to work with Paul. Although filming has since resumed, Paul has opted not to participate in the current season.
As Mental Health Awareness Month unfolds, Paul’s candid reflections serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding mental health, particularly in the wake of personal crises and public scrutiny.
