Having previously hosted social gatherings through his initiative, “Nice Jewish”, Bernstein found that the transition away from alcohol presented one of the most significant challenges. Reflecting on how he used to cope with being in bustling social settings, he noted that a few glasses of wine would typically ease the experience. However, as days without alcohol accumulated, he began to recognise the far-reaching effects of his new lifestyle.

Initial physical changes came swiftly, with Bernstein reporting a substantial weight loss of nearly 40 pounds. As he moved beyond the rehabilitation phase, it became apparent that the emotional and social adjustments were more complex and required deeper reflection. He explained, “Now I find myself wanting to be alone much more, which has been a challenge. I am learning to be more intentional with how I socialise and the environments I put myself in.”

In light of these changes, Bernstein has shifted his social habits significantly. Where he once favoured large, vibrant gatherings, he now seeks out smaller, more intimate settings, attending quiet activities such as pickleball. “It is still something I am working through, but I am starting to find a version of socialising that actually feels good without alcohol,” he expressed, highlighting his ongoing adaptation process.
The focus on physical health has also become paramount for Bernstein, who has directed his previously alcohol-centric energy into exercise and healthier habits. However, this has not come without its own unique set of challenges. “I have always been an all-or-nothing person, and that shows up in everything I do,” he admitted, noting that this intensity can sometimes lead to extremes.
Bernstein’s new health regimen includes rigorous practices that challenge both his physical and mental limits. Among these experiences are extended fasting periods and days of meditation, which he says have contributed to his personal growth during this transition. “For example, I recently completed a 72-hour fast, and I also spent five days in complete silence, meditating for up to ten hours a day,” he shared. Nevertheless, he emphasised that his approach is deeply personal and may not suit everyone. “I am just trying to figure out what works for me, and there is no real blueprint,” he added.
Despite the progress he has made, Bernstein was candid about the challenges of adjusting to his new lifestyle. The changes he has embraced have crafted a life markedly different from the one he left behind. “It is still something I am working through,” he reflected, illustrating the continual nature of his journey towards a healthier and more fulfilling existence.
Bernstein’s openness not only provides a glimpse into the nuances of his transformation but also serves as a source of encouragement for others contemplating sobriety or struggling with similar adjustments in life. His story embodies the reality that personal growth often involves navigating through uncertainty and embracing change with resilience, and one that illustrates the ongoing journey of self-discovery unfettered by previous habits.
As the conversation around alcohol consumption and wellness continues to evolve, Bernstein’s experience highlights the importance of authenticity in forging one’s path. By prioritising health and connection in new ways, he illustrates the possibility of finding joy and satisfaction outside the influence of alcohol. Through his commitment to sobriety, he is not only redefining his own life but also inspiring others to consider the profound changes that can come from such transformative choices.
