A stolen utility truck caused chaos in Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon, 5th May, when it crashed into a vehicle at an intersection before veering into the playground of a local elementary school. Fortunately, no children were harmed during the incident, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are currently underway.

The unfolding drama was witnessed by Jamele Ransom, a crossing guard at S. Weir Mitchell Elementary School. In an emotional interview with NBC affiliate WCAU, Ransom recounted the harrowing moment when the stolen truck ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. “He ran the red light, t-boned the lady,” he explained, visibly shaken as he described the rapid sequence of events. Ransom’s on-screen appearance took a lighter turn when he was seen eating an ice cream cone, expressing gratitude for surviving the incident. “I’m just thankful. Thankful to be alive right now. Thank you, Jesus,” he stated.

The chaos began earlier in the afternoon when reports of a multi-district crime spree were confirmed by the Philadelphia Police Department. According to their statements, a man attempted to carjack a woman’s vehicle around 2:13 p.m. in the 6300 block of Grays Avenue. Shortly thereafter, a white utility truck, left running at the intersection of 62nd and Reedland streets, was stolen.

Using surveillance footage, investigators tracked the stolen vehicle as it struck a parked SUV on Elmwood Avenue before careening onto the sidewalk. The truck ultimately ran a red light at 55th Street and Kingsessing Avenue, which Ransom observed. WCAU footage showed the moment the truck collided with another car, leading to a chain of subsequent crashes involving two additional parked vehicles.

In the aftermath, Ransom described rushing to assist a child who had become trapped in one of the crashed vehicles. “I grab a kid out because he’s stuck, frantic, pull him out,” he said, explaining how he quickly assessed the scene around him. “Ain’t nobody in there. Guy’s in there. He’s trapped in there,” he added, revealing that he was alarmed yet driven to help. Despite the tense situation, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia School District later confirmed to PEOPLE that no students were present in the courtyard during the incident.

Law enforcement officials promptly arrived at the scene, apprehending the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Robert Littlepage from Douglasville, Georgia. Littlepage was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and has since been charged with attempted carjacking, aggravated assault, reckless driving, and several other related offences.

Initial reports indicated that the driver of the vehicle struck by Littlepage was taken to hospital but remains in stable condition. Tyrone Smalls, a nearby resident, shared his concern for the injured individual and expressed relief that no serious injuries were reported. His own car had also been affected by the crash, but he maintained a perspective on the value of lives over material possessions. “The car can be replaced, but a life can’t… especially a little life,” he remarked.
