Sharifa Jackson and her husband Jaro have shared their heartfelt experiences as new parents after bringing their daughter Arya home from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in April. Arya, born a remarkable 16 weeks premature and weighing just over one pound, spent an arduous 236 days in the NICU before her eventual discharge.

In a recent appearance on The Tamron Hall Show, Sharifa discussed the family’s transition to life outside the hospital. “We’re trying to figure out our new normal living outside of the hospital,” she informed the audience. The joy of being able to take Arya for walks and hold her whenever they wished was palpable. “It’s been great,” she added, remarking on the thrill of their newfound family activities and Arya’s healthy development.

Reflecting on their emotional journey, Jackson recounted the surreal moment they drove Arya home for the first time. “We get her in the car, and then finally we were driving home, and we’re like, ‘Whose baby is sitting right next to me here in this car? Where are we going [with this baby]? We’re taking her home?’” she joked, conveying the mix of disbelief and joy they felt during that pivotal moment.

Sharifa’s pregnancy began normally, but everything changed abruptly when complications arose unexpectedly. She remembered feeling unwell, and within three hours, she was in the hospital welcoming Arya into the world. The journey that followed was one filled with challenges. For nearly eight months, Sharifa and Jaro stood vigil at Arya’s side, praying for her health as she faced significant medical hurdles, including a heart defect, severe lung disease, and multiple blood transfusions. It was a long wait before Sharifa was finally able to hold her daughter for the first time, an experience that was both precious and bittersweet.
The day Arya was discharged from the hospital was a momentous occasion. The happiness and relief in the Jackson family were reflected in the celebratory atmosphere that filled the hospital as staff members joined in cheering for Arya’s journey. “I think we got on the steps [and] I said, ‘Whose baby is this?’” Sharifa recalled, highlighting how surreal it felt after so many months spent in the NICU. It was as if they had become accustomed to that environment, and now they were faced with the incredible task of life as a family at home.
Despite the challenges inherent in their journey, Sharifa and Jaro’s commitment to Arya continued to shine through, as did their gratitude. “I knew she would come home one day. I just didn’t know when,” Sharifa remarked, emphasising how her hopes were initially overshadowed by uncertainty. Over time, she learned to adapt to the lengthy wait for Arya’s return.
As the family settles into their new routine, the support from the community and staff at the hospital remains a significant part of their narrative. The overwhelming sense of joy at Arya’s homecoming compensates for the difficulties endured during her stay in the NICU. Jackson expressed deep appreciation for all the doctors and nurses who played a part in Arya’s care, acknowledging their vital role in aiding the family’s journey toward this new chapter.
Sharifa and Jaro’s story serves as an inspiring testament to resilience, love, and hope in the face of adversity. As they navigate life with baby Arya, they are slowly redefining their understanding of family, celebrating each small milestone, and treasuring every moment spent together at home. Their uplifting experience resonates with many who have faced similar challenges, reflecting the strength of the human spirit and the deep bond between a parent and child.
