A 22-year-old from Harrisonburg, Virginia, Xavier Dillard, has made headlines after allegedly breaking the world record for the most pull-ups completed within a 24-hour period. Dillard claims to have accomplished an astounding total of 12,412 pull-ups, surpassing the prior record of 12,345 held by Mexican athlete Enrique Zapata.

Dillard’s record-setting feat took place from 10:00 a.m. on 2nd May to 10:00 a.m. on 3rd May, and he documented the entire event via a live stream on YouTube, broadcasted from a local CrossFit gym. However, it is worth noting that for Dillard to be officially recognised as the record holder, the footage will require verification by Guinness World Records.

The motivation behind Dillard’s pursuit of this record can be traced back to a competitive experience three years ago. During a training session in a friend’s basement, he found himself bested in pull-ups, an outcome that sparked his determination to improve. “I’m better than him in every other exercise except pull-ups. Like, I hate pull-ups,” he shared in an interview with WHSV. This realisation propelled him into a rigorous training regimen, as he started to dedicate himself to mastering the pull-up.
For two years, Dillard devoted himself to honing his skills. He began his training routine with four sets of 12 pull-ups, gradually increasing the numbers over time with a goal of reaching 14,000 for the 24-hour challenge. His daily commitment to such an arduous routine included as many as 2,400 pull-ups in a single week, with training sessions lasting up to four hours.
Despite his rigorous preparation, Dillard encountered significant physical and mental challenges during the attempt. He recounted moments of severe discomfort, including blurry vision and feelings of despair, yet he remained resolute. “I was thinking I was dying,” he admitted, but added, “For some reason, I wanted this record so bad. I just had to keep going.”
Upon completing the pull-up challenge, Dillard took to Instagram, celebrating his achievement with a simple hashtag, “#pullup #worldrecord.” His journey to this moment highlights a transformation from being one of the slower athletes on his cross-country team in his youth to setting a potential world record in an activity he once dreaded.
In interviews, Dillard has shown humility in his accomplishments, remarking on how his past difficulties have shaped his work ethic and commitment. Dillard revealed that he was “very skinny” during his younger years, but through determination and hard work, he was able to turn his aspirations into reality.
Offering encouragement to others contemplating breaking records, Dillard advised, “Keep your head low and just work on what you’re passionate about.” His story serves as an inspiration to anyone looking to challenge themselves, demonstrating that dedication and perseverance can lead to remarkable achievements.
As Dillard waits for Guinness World Records to confirm the validity of his record, the local community and supporters are rallying around his achievement, eager to see if he will officially hold the title. Whatever the outcome, Dillard’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and competitive spirit, emphasising that with commitment, anything is possible.
