The celebrated singing competition, American Idol, is gearing up for a thrilling finale as it heads into the concluding stages of its 24th season. The episode aired on May 4, provided a unique twist by featuring a “Class of 2006 Reunion,” celebrating two decades since the memorable fifth season aired.
In a nod to the past, the episode welcomed back five fan-favourite contestants: Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler, Elliott Yamin, Bucky Covington, and Taylor Hicks, who won the season five crown. Adding to the nostalgia, original judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul also took part, serving as mentors to the current top five contestants. Abdul expressed her joy at returning to the show, sharing her excitement about reconnecting with familiar faces from the past, as well as engaging with this season’s hopefuls.

The semi-final episode not only marked a significant reunion but also featured an unusual crossover event with pros from Dancing with the Stars, who enlivened the stage with their dance performances alongside the contestants. Each of the top five finalists—Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, Keyla Richardson, Braden Rumfelt, and Chris Tungseth—performed along with the returning stars from season five.
Among the successful contestants who advanced to the season finale, Keyla Richardson shone brightly with an energetic rendition of “River Deep – Mountain High,” originally by Tina Turner. For her duet, she paired up with Taylor Hicks to deliver a powerful performance of Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City.”

However, the episode also saw the elimination of two contestants, thus narrowing down the final contenders for the grand finale. Chris Tungseth, who initially wowed the audience with his Folk-rock interpretation of Noah Kahan’s “Northern Attitude,” did not make the cut, alongside Braden Rumfelt. Tungseth carried on the energetic theme with a cover of Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls,” teaming up with Bucky Covington for the performance.
Braden Rumfelt, another elimination, performed Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” during the Dancing with the Stars crossover. He later upped the emotional stakes with a duet featuring Paris Bennett, singing Queen’s “The Show Must Go On,” highlighting the dramatic flair that has characterised this season.
Conversely, the remaining contestants had their moments to shine. Hannah Harper performed a sultry rendition of Peggy Lee’s “Fever,” earning high praise from judge Luke Bryan, who commended her for taking the audience by surprise. For her duet, Harper collaborated with Kellie Pickler to recreate “A Broken Wing” by Martina McBride, a nostalgic choice as it was the same song Pickler auditioned with during her original season.
Jordan McCullough, who also secured his place in the finale, delivered an emotive performance with Leona Lewis’ “Footprints in the Sand.” Paula Abdul lauded McCullough’s raw talent, describing it as “otherworldly” and highly impactful. In a duet, he joined forces with Elliott Yamin to perform “A Song for You” by Donny Hathaway, which further showcased his vocal abilities.
As fans continue to follow the gripping journey of this season’s contestants, excitement builds for the impending finale. The blend of returning stars and current contenders not only adds an exhilarating dimension to the competition but also allows viewers to witness the evolution and enduring appeal of American Idol.
With the finale just around the corner, the stakes have never been higher, as audiences eagerly await to see who will emerge victorious in this iconic singing competition.
