A 64-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Florida, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty following a disturbing incident involving a group of ducklings. Beverly Sasberry was taken into custody on April 30 after surveillance footage allegedly captured her deliberately running over the ducklings with her vehicle.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 25 on Tempest Street in Jacksonville’s Westside area. According to witnesses, Sasberry drove a red Honda Accord multiple times over the group of baby ducks, making several turns to target them. A couple living nearby observed the shocking scene and later provided the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) with the surveillance footage as evidence.

When confronted by the couple days later regarding the incident, Sasberry purportedly admitted to intentionally killing the ducklings, claiming that she was angered by the mess they had made in her yard. Her comments were described as chilling, suggesting that she was unapologetic and even boasted about wanting to harm more ducks.
Kyle Hutchinson, a neighbour who witnessed the events unfold, recounted how he saw Sasberry’s vehicle moving erratically through yards before speeding away as it struck the ducklings. He noted that there were dead ducks scattered about, with several others attempting to flee from the vehicle. Hutchinson’s confrontation with Sasberry further revealed her alarming mindset, as she allegedly expressed a desire to kill more ducks.
Following the revelation of the incident, Hutchinson filed a formal report with the local police. The situation escalated into a serious criminal matter, with Sasberry facing 11 felony charges of animal cruelty. The charges reflect the gravity with which authorities view such actions, as they aim to address and prevent animal abuse in the community.
In a statement issued to the media, the JSO expressed their commitment to handling animal cruelty cases with the utmost seriousness. They urged the public to report any observed acts of violence towards animals, emphasising the importance of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable wildlife.
As the case continues to develop, the local community remains shaken by the incident. Many residents expressed their outrage over Sasberry’s actions, highlighting the need for compassionate treatment towards all living beings, including animals that often find themselves in urban environments.
Supporters of animal welfare have called for stricter penalties for violations of animal cruelty laws, arguing that such incidents reflect broader societal issues regarding the treatment of animals. The case serves as a reminder of the responsibility individuals have to ensure the safety and well-being of animals, particularly those that are unable to advocate for themselves.
The JSO has yet to provide further updates following Sasberry’s arrest, and it remains to be seen how the judicial process will unfold. As the community watches closely, many are hoping for justice, not only for the ducklings that lost their lives but also as a statement against animal cruelty in all its forms.
