In a remarkable incident that has captured the attention of residents in Pico Rivera, California, a ten-year-old cat named Mama has become an unexpected local hero after bravely fighting off a coyote. The dramatic encounter, which unfolded in broad daylight outside a home on Manzanar Avenue, was caught on security cameras and has since gone viral.

Debbie Beltran, Mama’s owner, was at work on May 1 when she received a shocking clip from a neighbour that revealed her beloved feline stood its ground against the much larger predator. “I was in shock,” Beltran recounted to KTLA-TV. “At first, I wasn’t sure if the cat was ours or someone else’s, but it turned out to be Mama.”

In the footage, Mama can be seen fiercely confronting the coyote, showcasing her indomitable spirit and tenacity. The cat eventually climbs a nearby tree, managing to evade the predator. “Coyotes usually come out when the sun goes down,” Beltran noted, expressing her disbelief that such an encounter could occur during daylight hours.
Mama, a resilient feline who has been part of the Beltran family for about five years, has always been regarded as “feisty” by her owner. Beltran remarked on Mama’s fearless nature, stating, “She’s always been this type of cat and doesn’t back down from a fight, so it doesn’t really surprise me.” This spirited personality was on full display during the confrontation with the coyote.
Tragically, this incident is not the first run-in Beltran’s family has had with coyotes. In a distressing turn of events, one of her other cats was killed by a coyote attack last year. Following Mama’s daring encounter, Beltran has been keen to give her extra love and attention, grateful that she was able to come out of the situation unscathed.
The presence of coyotes in California has been a growing concern for pet owners. Just months before Mama’s bold display of bravery, two children were injured in separate coyote attacks in San Diego, highlighting the risks posed by these wild animals. In November 2025, a three-year-old girl and another child sustained injuries, with reports indicating that the coyote incidents have led to increased caution among residents.
The threat of coyote attacks extends beyond pets; human interactions have also raised alarms in several regions in California. In an earlier incident, a six-year-old boy was attacked by a coyote at Del Amo Park in Carson. The child described the encounter as “painful,” likening the bite to that of a wolf.
This series of events emphasises the need for awareness surrounding wildlife interactions, particularly in suburban areas where such encounters are on the rise. As a result, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, especially during times when coyotes are known to frequent residential areas.
In response to the increase in coyote incidents, various municipalities, including those in California, may need to consider implementing measures to protect both pets and residents from potential wildlife threats. As for Mama, her fearless confrontation serves as a reminder of the remarkable instincts animals possess when faced with danger.
Mama’s courageous actions have not only safeguarded her life but also provided a moment of reflection for the community on the unpredictable nature of wildlife. As pet owners continue to navigate living alongside coyotes, stories like Mama’s highlight the bond between humans and their pets, showcasing the bravery that can arise in the face of adversity.
