A substantial recall has been initiated for Afrin Original Nasal Spray due to the significant risk it poses to young children. Bayer, the pharmaceutical company responsible for the product, announced on April 30 that it is voluntarily recalling over 786,000 travel-sized bottles of the nasal spray, citing concerns about potential child poisoning.

The issue arises from the product’s packaging, which is not child-resistant. Moreover, the bottles lack the necessary front label statement mandated by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, making them non-compliant with safety regulations designed to prevent accidental ingestion by children. The nasal spray contains an imidazoline, a substance that underscores the importance of child-proofing.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall affects products distributed between September 2024 and April 2026, primarily at convenience stores and locations related to travel, such as airports and bodegas. The agency has emphasised the dangers presented to children, stating that swallowing the nasal spray could lead to serious injury or illness.

To date, there have been no reported cases of injury or illness related to the recalled products, and the safety notice clarified that there are no health risks linked to adult users of the Afrin nasal spray.
Consumers are urged to check their homes for unexpired bottles, specifically those with lot numbers 230361, 240822, 241198, 250066, 250152, 250646, and 250831. Each affected bottle clearly displays “Afrin Original Nasal Spray” and “1/5 FL OZ (6mL)” on its label. All other Afrin products that are currently available on the market are safe and sold in child-resistant packaging, hence not affected by this recall.
In light of this recall, Bayer has called for immediate action from consumers. They are advised to secure the recalled products out of sight and reach of children, to prevent any possible incidents. The company is in the process of informing distributors and retailers through official communications, while also facilitating refunds for affected consumers.
Individuals who possess these recalled bottles are encouraged to take advantage of the refund offer by submitting a photo through Bayer’s dedicated recall form, ensuring they are doing their part to protect children from accidental poisonings.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of adhering to safety standards in packaging consumer products. As Bayer works through the recall process, they aim to mitigate any potential risks to families and ensure that safety remains a top priority in their product offerings.
