A romantic relationship between forensic pathologist Caroline Muirhead and Alexander McKellar, a gamekeeper on a Scottish estate, took a sinister turn following an unexpected confession. What began as a whirlwind courtship ended with Muirhead playing a crucial role in exposing McKellar’s dark past, leading to his arrest for a serious crime.

McKellar, affectionately referred to as ‘Sandy’, had swept Muirhead off her feet following their initial meeting on Tinder in October 2020. Notably, McKellar described himself on the dating app as a “6ft 4 Highlander” looking for companionship. Their immediate bond, forged by discussions related to their careers — both connected to the theme of death — quickly deepened. However, friends and family voiced concerns, suggesting that Alexander harboured troubling characteristics.

Muirhead eventually confessed to having turned a blind eye to warnings from friends and McKellar’s twin brother, Robert. In a revealing appearance on Netflix’s newly released docuseries, *Should I Marry a Murderer?*, Muirhead reflected on her overwhelming infatuation, which clouded her judgment regarding the red flags presented to her throughout their relationship.
The turning point came after McKellar proposed in November 2020, after which he shocking revealed that he had struck and killed a man named Tony Parsons in a drunk driving incident three years earlier, and that he had buried Parsons’ body. This confession shook Muirhead to her core, although she initially struggled to come to terms with the reality of what she had heard.
Although she did not report Alexander to authorities immediately — feeling unprepared to process the enormity of his confession — circumstances changed in late December 2020. McKellar urged Muirhead to assist him in moving Parsons’ remains due to upcoming construction plans on the estate. This alarming request prompted her to contact the police, marking the beginning of a serious investigation into the brothers’ actions.
The investigation gained momentum on December 30, 2020, when police arrested the McKellar twins. However, their reluctance to cooperate resulted in no immediate charges, as authorities had yet to locate Parsons’ body. Astray from law enforcement, Alexander continued to meet Muirhead, unaware of her intentions to gather evidence against him.
In a brave endeavour to obtain physical evidence, Muirhead recorded discussions between the brothers about the crime. In one such meeting at the estate, she cleverly dropped a crushed Red Bull can in the area where McKellar indicated Parsons was buried. Subsequently, she alerted law enforcement, guiding them to the precise location.
In January 2021, police located Parsons’ body where Muirhead had instructed, and the twins were once again apprehended for their involvement in the incident. With the case developing, autopsy results provided chilling details regarding Parsons’ final moments, suggesting he had survived for up to half an hour after being struck. He had suffered severe injuries, including fractures, indicative of the grave circumstances surrounding his death.
As the trial progressed, both brothers were initially charged with murder. However, they later entered a plea deal, resulting in admitted guilt to a lesser charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. Alexander McKellar additionally pleaded guilty to culpable homicide.
On August 25, 2023, the court delivered its verdict, sentencing Alexander to 12 years in prison, while Robert received a sentence of just over five years. Following the trial, McKellar’s insurance company reached a settlement with Parsons’ family, providing them with a six-figure payment in January 2025, somewhat easing the burden of their loss, even as justice was served.
As their story unravels in the docuseries, it reveals the disturbing complexities of love intertwined with fatal consequences, leaving viewers to reflect on the far-reaching impact of violence and betrayal within relationships.
