Authorities began their investigation after the girl was reported missing on April 9 in Middletown, Connecticut. Local police, with the assistance of the Special Victims Unit, worked on the case and uncovered details of her journey to North Carolina. Reports indicated that Newman had met the teen three months prior through a dating application called Skout, which permits users to interact via live streams and conversations.

After establishing contact with the girl, Newman allegedly arranged for a ride-share service to transport her from Middletown to a train station. There, she boarded a train that took her to North Carolina. Following her disappearance, Middletown police reached out to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, requesting support in locating the missing girl.

On April 27, investigators were able to trace the girl to Newman’s residence. After receiving a location and description from Middletown authorities, the sheriff’s department dispatched deputies to investigate further. The girl was subsequently located and rescued from the suspect’s home.
Following the discovery, Newman was charged with first-degree kidnapping and statutory rape involving a child under 15 years of age. Furthermore, on April 28, prosecutors announced that additional charges would be filed against him. These included two counts of statutory rape and two counts of sexual offence against a minor.
As it stands, Newman is being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he is currently under no bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on May 14. This case has garnered significant media attention, and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the investigation remains active, with the possibility of further charges as it unfolds.
Authorities have taken a firm stance in addressing such serious allegations and emphasised the importance of vigilance and support for victims of sexual abuse. They encourage anyone who suspects child abuse to reach out to the appropriate hotlines, which provide confidential assistance 24/7 in multiple languages.
In light of this case, community members are reminded of the critical necessity to safeguard children and provide assistance to any individuals who may be victims of sexual abuse. As this investigation continues, further updates are anticipated, and the legal process will unfold in due course.
