A couple from Prairieville, Louisiana, has found themselves in custody following serious allegations of child abuse involving a 14-year-old boy. Gina Sagona, aged 44, and her husband Mark Sagona, aged 45, have been charged with child cruelty after an investigation led to the discovery of unsettling video evidence.

Authorities became involved after the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) reported concerning allegations. Detectives from the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) were dispatched to the Sagona residence on April 27 to investigate. There, they uncovered distressing footage that appeared to corroborate claims of abuse that had been made to the DCFS.

According to the APSO, the video depicted Gina Sagona forcing the young boy’s face into dog urine and subsequently dragging him through it. The footage further revealed that the teenager had been struck multiple times during the incident, indicating a troubling pattern of mistreatment. The relationship between the Sagona couple and the teenager remains unclear as authorities work to gather more information.
During an interview with detectives, Gina Sagona reportedly confessed to the abuse claims. Mark Sagona’s involvement was noted as he was said to have been present for portions of the incident, leading to their joint arrest. Both have since been booked into Ascension Parish Jail on felony charges, including one count each of cruelty to a juvenile. Additionally, Mark faces a charge as a principal to cruelty to a juvenile.
The couple’s bonds have been set at $50,000 for Gina and $40,000 for Mark, according to jail records. As of early May, both individuals remain in custody, awaiting their arraignment. It has not been confirmed whether they have legal representation at this stage.
The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement officials encouraging the public to report any suspected child abuse. They highlighted the availability of the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, which offers 24/7 support and is accessible in multiple languages. This hotline provides a valuable resource for those who may be witnessing or experiencing abuse.
Local authorities continue to emphasise the importance of safeguarding the well-being of children and taking allegations of abuse seriously. The care and safety of minors in Louisiana remains a priority for the community and its representatives.
As the case develops, the Sagona couple’s actions will be subject to legal scrutiny, and further details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses. The chilling nature of the allegations serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and immediate action when it comes to the protection of children in vulnerable situations.
