Netflix has unveiled its latest thriller series, ‘Man on Fire’, adapting A.J. Quinnell’s novel of the same name with a modern twist. The seven-episode series, reminiscent of the acclaimed 2004 film featuring Denzel Washington, is packed with pulse-pounding action, drama, and deep emotional arcs.

The narrative centres on John Creasy, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, an ex-Special Forces operative grappling with severe post-traumatic stress disorder. Haunted by the loss of his entire team during a failed operation in Mexico City, Creasy’s life takes a turn when he is contacted by an old friend, Paul Rayburn, played by Bobby Cannavale. Rayburn invites him to Rio de Janeiro, where he has been engaged by Brazilian President Carmo to thwart prospective terrorist threats to his upcoming election.

However, disaster strikes soon after Creasy’s arrival. A bomb detonation destroys the luxury apartment complex where Rayburn and his family resided, resulting in over 600 fatalities, including Rayburn’s family. This tragedy sets Creasy on a relentless mission for vengeance, as he pledges to safeguard Poe, Rayburn’s teenage daughter who survived the onslaught.
Joined by local taxi driver Valeria Melo, played by Alice Braga, Creasy’s quest becomes one of both justice and protection. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey to uncover those responsible for the bombing while evading those intent on silencing them.
Throughout the series, Creasy is misled, believing that the extremist group FRP and its incarcerated leader, Ferraz, orchestrated the attack. After taking down several key players in the organisation, he soon learns from Ferraz that the true masterminds behind the bombing are far more powerful—specifically President Carmo and his associate, Prado Soares, along with American CIA Agent Henry Tappen.
In a shocking exposition, Creasy discovers that Carmo used audacious tactics, including kidnapping Ferraz’s family to compel the FRP into action. The president intended to eliminate any threats to his campaign, but an earlier target was changed to the Rayburns’ building when Rayburn’s suspicions began to rise.
As the narrative unfolds, the viewer is thrust into a labyrinth of intrigue and deception. Ferraz offers Creasy a chance at the truth, asserting he possesses recordings that could expose the conspiracy, but it becomes evident that he has been playing his own game. This revelation pushes Creasy to devise a plan to take down Carmo, Soares, and Tappen using the very methods they thought they had mastered.
Creasy speculates that Tappen has implemented a “dead man’s switch,” an insurance policy that would threaten to reveal incriminating evidence should anything happen to him. Creasy hatches a scheme to exploit this upon confronting Tappen, setting the stage for a show-down steeped in tension.
The climax unfolds in a hospital where chaos reigns as tensions escalate and stakes rise. A tense standoff occurs between Creasy and the authorities, leading to a harrowing altercation between the vigilante and Tappen. In a gripping fight, Creasy musters the strength to defeat Tappen, delivering vengeance for the Rayburns.
However, the situation takes a drastic turn when Creasy finds himself critically wounded during a confrontation with Soares while attempting to rescue Poe from his clutches. As the lines between survival and sacrifice blur, Poe’s desperation and resilience shine through, highlighting the drawn bonds formed amidst the plight.
By the series’ conclusion, President Carmo is arrested, and the seismic results of the conspiracy become public. The surviving characters are seen navigating the aftermath of their harrowing experiences, with Melo and her daughter choosing to remain in Brazil, cautiously optimistic about the future under new governance.
Creasy’s journey, however, is not entirely concluded. The series finishes on a cliffhanger, suggesting that he may soon confront shadows from his past. A call from CIA Director Moncrief hints at new challenges that await the former operative linked to the tragedies in Mexico City.
While Netflix has yet to confirm a second season, the conclusion leaves ample room for further exploration of Creasy’s character and his ongoing struggles. Director Steven Caple Jr. expressed enthusiasm for the potential continuation of the series, alluding to endless stories waiting to be told.
The thrilling nature of ‘Man on Fire’, coupled with its emotional depth and social themes, positions it strongly among contemporary action dramas, which may well secure its place on Netflix for further seasons, should the demand arise.
