Maddicyn Brokenshire, a 28-year-old mother, is navigating an emotional and challenging path after the birth of her son, Ollyver, in 2025. Ollyver was born with amniotic band syndrome (ABS), a rare condition characterized by the presence of fibrous bands in the womb, leading to significant physical deformities and impaired functions. As a result, Ollyver has experienced challenges, including being blind in one eye.

Initially, Maddicyn feared that the world would be harshly judgmental towards her son due to his appearance. She described the fear of taking him out in public, imagining that strangers would stare or make disparaging remarks. Maddicyn voiced her concerns in an interview with PEOPLE, stating that negative comments she encountered online were especially troubling. “I would see comments saying he has no quality of life or that I am torturing him. Some even went as far as suggesting I should murder my son,” she recalled, expressing the heaviness of such thoughts.
Despite these fears, Maddicyn was taken aback by the warmth and kindness shown to them in real life. After taking the brave step of venturing out with Ollyver, she found the public to be supportive and compassionate rather than critical. “People were kind, curious, and welcoming. Other mothers offered assistance with clothes after surgeries and checked in on me, helping me feel less isolated,” she shared.
Ollyver, now eight months old, is described by Maddicyn as a lively and joyful presence, who brings light to every room he enters. She emphasised that those interacting with him do not see the negative assumptions often perpetuated online but are instead drawn in by his radiant spirit.
One place that offered a significant source of support for Maddicyn was Pamper Perfection, a beauty salon where she found a welcoming environment. There, the staff encouraged her to share Ollyver’s story and facilitated open conversations about his experiences. “The girls at the salon helped me rediscover my confidence as a mother and taught me that I did not need to hide my baby,” she noted. This boost in confidence has been crucial for Maddicyn, allowing her to advocate for her son openly.
Reflecting on her earlier experiences, Maddicyn acknowledged the fundamental shift in her outlook. “Confidence has positively influenced all aspects of our lives, whether at medical appointments or social gatherings. I learned that while online hate can sting, it rarely finds its way into our real-life encounters,” she explained. Emphasising the importance of parental strength, she believes it sets a vital example for Ollyver, equipping him with the resilience he will need.
Her journey to motherhood was not without heartache, having endured two traumatic miscarriages before conceiving Ollyver. When faced with significant complications during her pregnancy, including pre-eclampsia and the prospect of having to terminate, Maddicyn’s instinct was to continue despite the uncertainty. “I thought, if I lost him, at least he would have known love,” she recounted. After substantial medical struggles, Ollyver was born just in time, needing immediate resuscitation but ultimately surviving.
Ollyver has already undergone multiple surgeries since his birth, including procedures to address the bands affecting his functioning. Maddicyn is grateful for the positive news regarding his eye condition, where previous speculation of complete blindness seemed unlikely following a successful surgery. Although he will require further operations as he grows, his present state is encouraging.
Looking ahead, Maddicyn is determined to keep raising awareness about Ollyver’s condition while connecting with other families facing similar challenges. “It’s important to make sure those who may feel alone know they have support out there,” she remarked. Through her experiences, she has found pragmatic advice for other parents in difficult situations: “Surround yourself with understanding people, cherish every small milestone, and allow yourself to feel the full range of emotions.”
In addition to sharing her story, Maddicyn has initiated a fundraising page to alleviate some of the financial burdens that come with Ollyver’s care. Her message to others is clear: trust your instincts and stay strong for your child, as they are the best advocate for their journey. Ollyver’s story is one marked by resilience and love, underscoring the profound bond between a mother and her son.
