The incident occurred at approximately 1:38 PM local time, prompting a swift response from police and emergency services, leading to an immediate lockdown of the school. According to eyewitness accounts, chaos erupted as shouts of “He has a knife!” rang out amidst the fray. One student described the scene to local media, stating, “They were all on the floor and some of them were bleeding. There was blood on the floor.”
In the midst of the altercation, the security guard, who attempted to intervene to break up the fight, was stabbed in the forearm. The injured individuals included the guard and several students, with some suffering serious stab wounds and others sustaining minor cuts. Initially, four victims were placed in critical condition, but later reports indicated that all had been moved to stable condition by the evening.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect involved in the stabbing was also a student at the school and was injured during the incident. The juvenile was subsequently taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including five counts of first-degree assault. However, police have not disclosed the suspect’s identity due to their age.
Tacoma police spokesperson Officer Shelbie Boyd provided updates, stating that the investigation is actively ongoing to determine the details that led to the altercation. As the situation unfolded, parents were reassured that a reunification area was established at the school, allowing them to safely pick up their children after the lockdown was lifted at approximately 2:45 PM.
In the wake of the incident, Foss High School cancelled classes the following day, emphasising the seriousness of the situation. A former student commented on the rising violence in schools, saying, “This is not normal. This should never be normalised.”
Local education authorities, including Tacoma Public Schools, reflected on the shock and distress felt throughout the community as they navigated this crisis. The district released a statement expressing concern for the safety and wellbeing of both students and staff, underlining their commitment to maintaining a secure and nurturing learning environment.
This event follows a troubling trend of rising violence in educational settings, prompting renewed discussions about school safety measures and the need for effective conflict resolution tactics among students. As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are urging any witnesses to come forward with additional information that could aid in understanding the full context of the vicious altercation.
As Tacoma comes to terms with the aftermath of this violent episode, community leaders and educators are now faced with the task of addressing these issues while promoting a culture of safety and respect within schools. The efforts to support both victims and their families will be critical as they work to recover and heal from this alarming event.
