Kenny Jary, an adored influencer and Navy veteran, recently shared his experiences with both a significant milestone and a daunting health challenge. Earlier this year, Jary achieved a personal “bucket list” item by getting his first tattoo on his 84th birthday, a moment he captured and shared with his followers on social media under the moniker Patriotic Kenny.

In a heartfelt essay for Business Insider, Jary reflected on his long-standing desire to get inked, recalling how during his time in the United States Navy, tattoos were a common sight among his fellow servicemen. He explained, “I was in the United States Navy, and everyone had tattoos. But I wasn’t really ready for it. You know how it is, you just put things off until the right opportunity comes.” Now, at a remarkable age, he felt it was time to act upon his dream.

In early February, as part of a birthday surprise, Jary was treated to a tattoo session by Joey Hamilton, a renowned artist and winner of the third season of Ink Master. The tattoo he chose features an anchor adorned with red, white, and blue stars, symbolising not only his Minnesota roots but also his three children and his proud service in the Armed Forces. Capturing the joyous moment on a YouTube video, Jary communicated his excitement with a humorous remark about potentially wanting more tattoos.
However, just a month later, Jary delivered distressing news to his audience, announcing that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. In an emotional message shared from his home after recovering from a hospital stay, he stated, “Hi, fans, how are you? I’m home from the hospital, and I feel a lot better — not bad at all. I got stage 4 lung cancer. So, it’s the way it goes. I mean, we can’t live forever.” Despite the daunting diagnosis, he expressed gratitude to his followers for their ongoing support and reassured them that he remains committed to posting content online.
Amid these challenges, Jary’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising funds for in-home health care and vital modifications to allow him to continue living with dignity at home, surrounded by his loved ones. The fundraiser portrayed Jary’s wish to enjoy meaningful experiences, highlighting his dream of taking a train ride. The family encouraged supporters to contribute, emphasising that any donation, regardless of size, would help make Jary’s remaining time not only comfortable but filled with joy.
As of now, the campaign is close to reaching its ambitious goal of $345,000, reflecting the immense support and affection the community has for the veteran influencer. Jary’s influence extends beyond his social media presence; he also founded the Patriotic Kenny Foundation, working towards making a difference in the lives of others.
In April, Jary kept his followers updated on his health journey. He revealed that he opted for immunotherapy treatment at the Mayo Clinic, stating, “I feel real good after my treatment. It didn’t hurt at all after the treatment in the Mayo and I feel good from that.” He continues to emphasise the importance of his fans checking in on him, responding to their concern with genuine warmth and appreciation.
Through both milestones and struggles, Jary’s journey showcases the power of connection and community support in navigating life’s challenges. As he faces this significant health battle, his resilience and spirit remain a source of inspiration for many, proving that even in tough times, there is room for joy and hope.
