A 28-year-old woman from Kentucky has been arrested for allegedly using duct tape to restrain her children’s mouths and noses as a means of discipline. Anna Bencosme was taken into custody on multiple charges, including strangulation, endangerment of a minor, and wanton endangerment, following an alarming incident in the parking lot of a government building.

On Tuesday, 28 April, authorities from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a disturbance just before half-past three in the afternoon. Witnesses claimed to have seen Bencosme shouting at a child within her vehicle, parked at the Wayne County Judicial Center. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers noticed the car starting to leave the parking area and promptly initiated a traffic stop.

Inside the vehicle, officers discovered four children. Disturbingly, two of them had duct tape applied to their faces, covering both their mouths and noses. This shocking discovery prompted immediate action, with one deputy removing the tape while another began to question Bencosme about the situation.
During her interrogation, Bencosme reportedly claimed that she had the right to discipline her children as she saw fit, stating that such measures were “routinely done” in her home. This assertion has raised concerns about the wellbeing and safety of her children, leading to a larger investigation.
In the aftermath of Bencosme’s arrest, which took place on the same day as the incident, the children were placed in the custody of their father. The case has been referred to the Kentucky Department of Child Protection Cabinet, which has since launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the children’s care and wellbeing.
As the investigation continues, questions remain about the potential long-term impact on the children involved. Child protective services will assess their living situation and determine the necessary steps to ensure their safety moving forward. It is currently unclear whether Bencosme has entered a plea regarding the charges against her or if she has secured legal representation.
The incident has sparked discussions about appropriate disciplinary measures and the boundaries of parental authority. Experts in child welfare often emphasise the importance of non-violent forms of discipline, as abusive practices can lead to long-lasting psychological and emotional harm.
In light of this case, officials have reiterated the significance of reporting suspected child abuse. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline stands ready to assist those who may have concerns about the welfare of children, providing confidential support and guidance in multiple languages, available 24/7.
As this situation unfolds, the welfare of the children remains a priority, and further updates are anticipated as investigations progress. Authorities encourage the community to remain vigilant and proactive in the face of potential child endangerment, emphasising that every child’s safety is paramount.
