Danh’s alarming health journey commenced on April 9, during what was supposed to be a joyful honeymoon. On the second day, she experienced a sudden and life-threatening health decline, leading to her hospitalisation. Initially, Danh was placed on life support and was diagnosed with acute liver failure, along with several other serious medical conditions, which left her in a coma for a significant period.

The family faced an emotional ordeal but received encouraging news when Danh returned to Texas on April 21. Her uncle, Khang Le, reported that she was slowly emerging from the coma, displaying small but meaningful signs of awareness. Among these were moments such as gently squeezing her mother’s hand and faintly nodding in response to questions, suggesting a connection to her family during this difficult time.
A subsequent MRI revealed damage to Danh’s brain; however, medical professionals indicated that this damage might be reversible. In a hopeful update shared on Facebook, Khang announced that Danh had shown signs of improvement, no longer relying on life support and breathing independently. “She is physically getting stronger,” he mentioned, adding that she was able to wiggle her toes and move her arms.
Despite these positive developments, Danh’s journey remains challenging. Khang noted that her motor skills and speech capabilities are severely limited at this stage. She currently requires assistance with basic life functions and is unable to speak. “She still struggles with simple tasks such as drinking water or eating,” he explained, while also noting that her ability to remember certain moments seems inconsistent. Despite her condition, she has displayed a range of emotions, smiling and laughing in response to familial interactions, which Khang described as heartening.
Another significant step in her recovery came when doctors assisted Danh in walking. Khang revealed that she managed to take a few small steps while being supported, marking an important milestone in her rehabilitation process.
The support from the community has been overwhelming, with a GoFundMe campaign established in Danh’s name raising over £187,000. Khang expressed gratitude for the prayers and well wishes directed towards his niece, attributing her resilience during this trying time to the collective support of family, friends, and the public.
It is essential to note that Danh’s health struggles are far from over. Further testing is required to pinpoint the underlying causes of her initial medical crisis. Once she is ready to leave the intensive care unit, Khang indicated that Danh will undergo extensive physical and cognitive therapy to aid her recovery.
While her husband, Luke Gradl, has been approached for comments regarding Danh’s condition, there has yet to be a response. The family continues to maintain a hopeful outlook as they navigate the complexities of her recovery together.
As Sarah Danh embarks on her healing journey, the support she has received from her community remains a vital component of her fight for recovery. With ongoing medical attention and rehabilitation, her family is cautiously optimistic about the progress she will continue to make in the coming weeks and months.
