Katie Couric, the renowned journalist and television presenter, recently opened up about the profound impact of her late husband Jay Monahan’s battle with colon cancer. Monahan, who passed away at the age of 42 in 1998, left enduring memories for Couric and their two daughters, who were only six and two years old at the time of his death. In a heartfelt interview, Couric discussed the significant milestones her husband was unable to witness, further emphasising the importance of advocacy for cancer screening.
During her participation in the Runway for Recovery fundraiser, Couric shared her reflections with PEOPLE, highlighting how essential family moments can shape lives. “It’s an indescribable feeling to know that something you said and did impacted someone so they could do something and that they’re gonna be around for their families,” she stated, underlining the motivation behind her advocacy work.

The former co-host of the “Today” show elaborated on the significant moments that Monahan missed during their daughters’ upbringing, such as proms, parent-teacher conferences, college acceptances, and graduations. “He missed so much,” Couric lamented, expressing the pain of not having his presence for key events, including the recent birth of his grandson, named Jay after him.
Couric’s commitment to increasing awareness about cancer screenings stems from her personal experiences with loss and her own battle with breast cancer. She voiced her hope that by sharing her story, she could contribute to preventing similar heartbreak for other families. “To think that some of these families aren’t gonna miss those moments and are going to be intact… that’s such a gift,” she expressed.

The broadcaster recognised the importance of initiatives like Runway for Recovery, which aims to support families affected by metastatic breast cancer. Couric noted that over the years, the event has successfully raised over £11.4 million, aiding those in difficult circumstances. During the fashion show, she will stand alongside more than 85 participants, all sharing a common goal of honouring those impacted by the disease.
Olivia Boger, the founder and CEO of Runway for Recovery, emphasised the significance of Couric’s involvement in the project. She pointed out that Couric’s presence offers a sense of solidarity and encouragement to those battling cancer. “I think it makes a huge difference for them to know that they’re not alone and that their story could have threads that connect to hers,” Boger remarked.
The connection Couric shares with cancer survivors resonates deeply, as many women involved in the event seek to find comfort in shared experiences. Boger highlighted how Couric’s willingness to participate in the fundraiser makes a significant impact on attendees. “For her to say yes… it’s life-changing for us,” she noted.
As Couric continues to raise awareness and advocate for cancer screenings, her journey remains a powerful reminder of the importance of support, both familial and communal. By sharing her story, she hopes to encourage others to seek early screenings and ultimately save lives, ensuring that families can celebrate all those cherished milestones together.
