A serious road traffic incident occurred in Queensland, Australia, on Thursday evening, 30th April, involving four vehicles and raising significant concerns due to the alleged involvement of a 14-year-old unlicensed driver. This incident has sparked attention, occurring on the third anniversary of a previous tragic event on the same stretch of road that resulted in the deaths of three individuals.

According to Queensland Police, the teenage driver was behind the wheel of an unregistered and uninsured Mitsubishi Lancer when he lost control of the vehicle. Along with three other teenagers, he reportedly swerved into the southbound lane, first colliding with a Suzuki Swift, then striking a Volkswagen Polo head-on. The latter was subsequently rear-ended by a Hyundai Kona.
Emergency services arrived swiftly at the scene and undertook the challenging task of freeing several individuals trapped in their cars. Inspector Paul Algie of Queensland Police indicated that excessive speed likely contributed to the severity of the crash, although the driver’s inexperience also played a significant role in the event’s dynamics.

The injuries sustained by the occupants of the vehicles were severe; two individuals remain in critical condition. The 16-year-old girl travelling in the Lancer was airlifted to hospital due to her serious injuries. The driver, along with two other teenagers in the vehicle, were transported to the hospital but were reported to be in stable condition.
The driver of the Suzuki Swift, an 18-year-old woman, was also critically injured and required immediate airlift to a medical facility. Her passenger, a 58-year-old man, was transported as a precautionary measure. Injuries were reported among the occupants of the Hyundai Kona, which included a 40-year-old man and two passengers, while the 19-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Polo was likewise hospitalised for precautionary checks.
Queensland law stipulates that drivers must be at least 17 years old to apply for a provisional driver’s licence, raising further questions about the circumstances of the incident. The vehicle involved in the crash was reportedly owned by the teenager’s grandparent and had previously been registered to the mother of one of the injured teens. Police have noted that the family is understandably distressed following the incident.
Inspector Algie expressed empathy towards the families involved, mentioning the trauma they are likely experiencing. “Obviously, they’re both very traumatised as a result of what’s happened and their daughter and granddaughter is seriously injured,” he remarked. The police force will be approaching the family to discuss the details surrounding how the vehicle came to be used that evening.
In light of the unfolding investigation, officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Specifically, they are seeking individuals who may possess relevant information, CCTV footage, or dashcam recordings of the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police, quoting reference number QP2600831325, or report anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
This incident has drawn parallels with a tragic event that occurred on the same road exactly three years prior, during which a teenager driving a stolen vehicle caused three fatalities. Inspector Algie acknowledged the community’s likely reflection on that previous incident, stating, “I have no doubt that as a result of this crash, they will be thinking about this again and it will bring up all of the very unpleasant and traumatic feelings that occurred on that night.”
Authorities continue to investigate the details surrounding this latest crash, advocating for road safety and the necessity of adhering to legal driving requirements. The community’s response and support for those affected will be crucial as the investigation progresses and families begin to recover from this devastating event.
