An 18-year-old international kart racer from Brazil and Italy has been extradited to the United Kingdom to face charges of murder following a tragic incident involving his Airbnb host. Enzo Bettamio is accused of killing Kamonnan Thiamphanit, a 27-year-old property manager, whose body was discovered in her London apartment on April 8, 2024.

Thiamphanit, a dual citizen of China and Thailand, had moved to the UK nine years earlier to pursue her studies and had made a life for herself in property management. On the night prior to her death, she had been socialising with friends, engaging in an evening of board games. However, early on the morning of April 6, she informed her friends of an emergency at her rental property and left abruptly.

According to details presented in court by prosecutor Nadeem Holland, Thiamphanit was last seen alive when she was dropped off at her Airbnb location by an Uber around 4:24 a.m. that morning. In a disconcerting turn of events, around 13 hours later, camera footage captured Bettamio hailing a taxi nearby and heading towards the airport, where he purchased a ticket to Dubai.

It was only after Thiamphanit’s friends raised concerns about her absence that police were alerted. Despite two calls made to law enforcement on April 7, the case was deemed medium-risk, and it was not until April 8 that she was discovered deceased in her home.
An autopsy revealed the shocking nature of her death, with multiple sharp force injuries evident across her body. Disturbingly, a large knife was found protruding from her neck. The precise nature of the events leading to her death remains unclear to investigators, who have yet to establish a possible motive for the alleged attack.
Following his alleged involvement in the crime, Bettamio reportedly fled to Dubai mere hours after the incident. He was extradited back to the UK this month, where he now faces murder charges. His lawyers have confirmed that he is to be subjected to a plea hearing scheduled for July 14.
The young man’s connection to the crime has drawn considerable media attention, particularly due to his young age and his background as an international athlete. Bettamio’s extradition marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the seriousness with which the UK authorities are treating this case.
Thiamphanit’s family has expressed their discontent with the initial police response to their concerns over her disappearance. They described feeling frustrated by the perceived lack of urgency in the days leading up to her body being found, especially after Thiamphanit’s friends had reached out to authorities about her absence.
Her mother, Fiona Fu, and partner, Chris Zeng, have spoken out regarding their sorrow and dissatisfaction with how the police handled the case. They believe that immediate action could have been taken earlier, which might have altered the tragic outcome.
As developments in the case continue to unfold, many are now closely monitoring the proceedings surrounding Bettamio and the wider implications regarding safety, particularly in rental properties. The community is still grappling with the circumstances surrounding Thiamphanit’s death, which has raised difficult questions about the responsibilities of hosts and the protection of guests in shared accommodation.
The case illuminates the vulnerabilities that can arise within the booming short-term rental market, highlighting the necessity for stringent security measures and vigilant regulations to ensure the safety of both hosts and guests alike.
