An Ohio father, Philip Pohle, is on a long road to recovery after a workplace accident left him with a life-threatening condition known as internal decapitation. The incident occurred in March while Pohle, aged 32, was clearing fallen trees from a roadway at Hocking Hills State Park.

According to reports from CBS affiliate WBNS, the unfortunate event unfolded when Pohle’s foot became lodged on the gas pedal of a front loader. This led to a tree branch being thrust into his neck, creating a severe injury that forced his skull away from his spine. “I heard a pop or a crack like that, and I had a decapitation,” he recalled of the harrowing moment.
Emergency responders acted quickly, arriving on the scene to assist Pohle, who remained trapped in the machinery. Natural resource officers, among the first to provide aid, stabilised his neck with a brace while other crew members worked to remove the tree. Pohle later shared his thoughts during the moments following the accident, revealing, “I started thinking of my children because it was really nice being a dad. I just thought how much I was going to miss them, miss my babies.”
After initial treatment at Hocking Valley Hospital, Pohle was transferred to Grant Medical Center in Columbus where his condition was diagnosed by neurosurgeon Dr. Victor Awuor. Pohle’s case was particularly concerning as he was reportedly just two millimetres away from severing his spinal cord. The medical team was able to restore stability to his spine using plates, screws, and rods.
As of late April, it has been reported that Pohle is showing remarkable signs of recovery, with him already able to walk without assistance. His medical team has deemed his recovery extraordinary given the severity of his injury. Still, Pohle faces an extensive rehabilitation process ahead.
In light of the sudden nature of the incident, Pohle’s family and friends have mobilised to support him. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Brittany Berry, a close friend of Pohle’s girlfriend, has already raised over £15,000 to assist with the family’s ongoing expenses during this challenging time. Berry reflected on the emotional impact of the accident, stating, “This was such a fast-devastating blow to their little family, and now the world rests on Haley’s shoulders.”
Pohle’s experience has inspired him to share heartfelt advice with others: “Love deeply and have grace with people. Be patient, be kind, tomorrow is not guaranteed.” His message serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing loved ones.
As he continues to recover, Pohle’s family and supporters are hopeful for a full recovery, allowing him to return to his role as a dedicated father. His story has resonated widely, drawing attention to the risks associated with manual labour and the importance of safety measures in the workplace.
