On the night of Zhuang’s death, Santa Clarita deputies responded to The Vistas condominium complex at 6:47 p.m. According to Lieutenant Michael Modica of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Zhuang had suffered “several” unspecified upper body injuries. Despite medical aid efforts by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Zhuang unfortunately passed away at the scene. The night before her tragic demise, Zhuang had returned home with a male companion who was later identified leaving her apartment through a second-story window on the day of her death.
During a press conference, Modica emphasised that the murder was not a random act of violence but rather an “isolated incident”. He stated that Zhuang had some prior connection with the person of interest, as evident from allowing that individual into her apartment. The suspect was captured on video leaving Zhuang’s residence, prompting officials to release photos of the individual and commence a search. Zhuang, originally from mainland China, had been studying art in California on a student visa for three and a half years. Some friends and fellow students knew her as Emily King.
Terry, the accused murderer, is presently in custody without bail as per the Sheriff’s Department statement. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, March 27.
