The Cleveland Clinic Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is embracing the city’s fervour for basketball by dressing its smallest patients in gear from the Cleveland Cavaliers, just in time for the NBA playoffs. This unique initiative aims to lift spirits and foster a sense of community for families with babies receiving care in the unit.

As the Cavaliers prepare to face off against the Toronto Raptors in a crucial playoff match, the NICU has turned into a mini celebration of local pride. Babies have been adorned in team-themed knit hats and headbands, with some families sharing their photos on social media to show support for their beloved basketball team.
Twins Sullivan and Callahan became mini ambassadors of team spirit as they sported bright headbands emblazoned with the Cavaliers’ logo. Their fellow NICU patients, also twins, expressed their allegiance in their own way: sister Margot dressed up as Moondog, the Cavaliers’ mascot, while her brother Benjamin donned a beard and matching headband, showcasing the vibrant community spirit that Cleveland is known for.

Julie Gamary, the nurse manager of the NICU at the Cleveland Clinic, expressed her pride in facilitating such a heartwarming initiative. “We’re proud to bring a little Cleveland spirit into the NICU,” she said, adding that these small, thoughtful gestures can create joyful moments for families facing difficult circumstances. “Seeing our babies dressed in Cavs-inspired hats and headbands gives families a joyful moment and a shared connection to something the community is cheering for.”
For many families, the significance of these gestures extends far beyond mere dress-up. Jen and Jesse Shafts, whose son Giovanni spent 17 days in the NICU before he could finally go home, were particularly touched by the initiative. Jesse celebrated the day of his son’s discharge by wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers sweatshirt, symbolising the family’s pride and connection to the city’s team.
Reflecting on their experience, Jen expressed heartfelt gratitude for the care their son received during his time in the NICU. “We’re so thankful for everyone who took care of our baby in the NICU,” she said, revealing a personal connection to the Cavaliers. “We’re Cavs fans, so seeing our baby dressed in team gear was one of those little moments that made us smile.”
The uplifting atmosphere created by the team-themed attire has fostered a sense of solidarity among the families in the NICU. For many of them, these small, thoughtful gestures provide moments of joy that can be hard to come by during such challenging times. By giving families a glimpse of the community’s support, the Cleveland Clinic’s NICU team aims to nurture both emotional and psychological well-being for families during their hospital stays.
As the playoffs continue, the NICU’s efforts are set to resonate even more deeply with families and supporters alike, reminding them of the importance of community during difficult times. The initiative serves as an uplifting reminder of Cleveland’s unwavering spirit, uniting families, healthcare providers, and fans through a shared love for the game and the city.
