In an extraordinary turn of events, a couple from Texarkana, Texas, Mary Studebaker and Shane Perkins, welcomed identical triplet boys last month. This remarkable occurrence has captured the attention of many, largely due to the rare nature of their conception, which took place without any fertility treatments.

The triplets, named Thomas Ray, Shane Austin, and Beaux Bentley, made their entrance into the world on April 23 at Willis-Knighton Health System. They were delivered prematurely, arriving at just 31 weeks of gestation. Each baby weighed between 2 and 3 pounds and is currently under close monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where they are expected to remain for several weeks as they continue to grow and develop.

Mary and Shane, who already have a 10-year-old daughter, were not anticipating such a significant expansion of their family when they decided to try for one more child. “Let’s just try for one more,” Mary said in an interview with ABC KTEN, recalling the couple’s casual approach. “And then, all of a sudden, triplets.”

The odds of conceiving triplets naturally are rare, estimated at about one in 10,000 pregnancies. However, when it comes to identical triplets without the assistance of fertility treatments, the likelihood drops significantly to approximately one in a million, making this family’s story all the more remarkable.
Dr. Christian Briery, a physician at Willis-Knighton Health System, spoke on the unusual nature of this phenomenon. “This is a rare occurrence,” he noted, adding that spontaneous conception of identical triplets occurs in around one in 8,000 to 10,000 pregnancies. “Any time this happens, we should celebrate. It’s just a really neat phenomenon.”
With the excitement of newborns in their home, Mary and Shane’s daughter is already taking steps to help welcome her new brothers. She has taken upon herself to create colour-coded bracelets for the triplets. “My 10-year-old actually made bracelets,” Mary explained, showcasing the thoughtful gesture. “She has them colour-coded — one’s green, one’s blue and one’s orange.”
Shane expressed his mixed feelings during the delivery, admitting that the experience was daunting. “I was scared to death,” he confessed. “I was just holding [Mary’s] hand. Especially when you see, well, one baby comes out, and then another, and then another.” The couple’s journey into parenthood has taken an unexpected and thrilling turn, adding to the dynamics of their family.
As the family of five adjusts to their new reality, the excitement surrounding the triplets has not gone unnoticed by the broader community. Their story serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the joys that can emerge even from unexpected circumstances.
In a world where identical triplets arriving naturally is an exceptionally rare event, the celebration of Mary and Shane’s family serves as an inspiring tale of love, perseverance, and the unique surprises that life can offer. The future holds great promise for the triplet boys as they continue to grow in the NICU and eventually join their family at home, fully welcomed into a loving household.
