In an amusing turn of events following a recent snowstorm, a Wisconsin woman has captured the attention of many as her chickens displayed an unexpected survival strategy — clambering onto ducks to navigate through deep snow. Katelyn Dei, a resident of Kewaunee, shared this whimsical observation on social media, igniting a flurry of engagement online.

Dei, who has been familiar with poultry from a young age, was taken aback by the behaviour she witnessed during a snowstorm that blanketed her property with nearly 28 inches of snow. Despite her lifetime of experience with chickens and ducks, she remarked that she had never encountered anything quite like this before. “Yes, I’ve lived in Wisconsin my entire life and have endured some crazy winters, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen chickens so confused by the snow and hop on another animal to get around,” Dei explained.

While the snowstorm brought challenges to her birds, it also provided a comical spectacle. The chickens struggled to keep their footing in the fluffy drifts, with many sinking almost completely beneath the surface. In contrast, the ducks, with their webbed feet, moved effortlessly through the snow, prompting the chickens to resort to riding on them to stay above ground.
A TikTok video showcasing the chickens’ antics soon garnered widespread attention, resonating with viewers who found humour in the unusual sight. “Poor babies sank and got stuck,” Dei captioned the clip. Her lighthearted approach to sharing the footage reflects her hope that it would bring joy to others, as she noted, “I shared it simply because I thought it was funny and someone would get a laugh.”
However, the peculiar weather didn’t end with the snowfall. Following the snowstorm, severe flooding swept through the area, forcing Dei’s chickens to adapt yet again as they navigated through pools of water. Daily life on her farm is replete with these surprises, including the charming routine of her birds flocking towards her whenever she steps onto her back porch, eagerly anticipating kitchen scraps.
Dei’s menagerie includes not only her chickens and ducks but also two Australian Shepherds, three horses, and a peacock named Penny, whom she believes was abandoned before finding a home with her. “It’s a full house, but one I’ve grown up with and love,” she shared, illustrating her strong bond with her animals.
The online response to her video has left her quite astonished. “I’m honestly still pretty dumbfounded by the millions of views, but it’s been really fun to see people enjoy it,” she added, reflecting on the viral nature of her post. In her experience, it is often the spontaneous and unscripted moments that capture the most attention, stating that the videos often go viral despite lacking heavy editing or planning.
Despite the extraordinary circumstances faced by her poultry, Dei managed to provide them with paths through the heavy snow by continuous shovelling efforts. Yet, it is the cheeky image of chickens seeking refuge on ducks that she believes will remain etched in her memory — a vivid reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the charm of farm life.
In a world where challenges loom large, Dei’s story stands as a reminder of the joy found in the small, whimsical moments that life can offer, proving that even in the harshest of weather, humour and resilience can shine through.
