A Wisconsin man, Chad L. Norton, aged 28, is currently facing multiple felony charges following a road rage incident that resulted in significant injuries to another driver. Court documents indicate that Norton has been charged with aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, both of which are serious felonies enhanced by the use of a dangerous weapon.

The charges arise from an altercation that took place on April 23 this year. According to reports, law enforcement officers responded to Ascension All Saints Hospital shortly before 7 p.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing victim. Upon arrival, investigators learned that the victim, accompanied by his girlfriend, was involved in a confrontation with Norton after he allegedly cut them off in traffic. The victim recounted that Norton shouted at him about not using his turn signal.

The situation escalated when the victim pulled up alongside Norton at the intersection of 12th Street and Washington Avenue. Norton reportedly threatened the victim, challenging him to step out of his vehicle. Both men exited their cars, leading to a brief altercation that reportedly lasted about seven seconds. The victim claimed he threw several punches during the scuffle but was unaware of being stabbed.
It was not until the victim returned to his vehicle that he realised he had sustained injuries. He drove himself to the hospital, where medical personnel treated him for multiple stab wounds and lacerations on his chest and arm, which required stitches.
In the aftermath, police reviewed video footage that appeared to show Norton making motions consistent with stabbing during the incident. Norton was subsequently arrested and, when questioned by officers, acknowledged that he did not remember brandishing a knife. However, he noted that he often carries a folding knife and claimed to have been attempting to stab the victim’s hand in a bid to defend himself.
During his arraignment on April 29, Norton pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and waived his preliminary hearing. This decision led to the case being moved forward after the court found sufficient probable cause. A status conference is set for June 2 to further address the case.
Bail has been established at £5,000, with specific conditions attached that include no contact with the victim and a prohibition on Norton possessing any weapons. Should he be found guilty, he could potentially face over 15 years in prison solely for the aggravated battery charge.
Requests for a statement from Norton’s legal representative have gone unanswered, and inquiries have also been made to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office and the Racine County District Attorney’s Office regarding the ongoing case.
As the community watches this development unfold, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the escalating tension that can occur on the roads, revealing the potential consequences of aggressive driving and road rage. The court proceedings will likely draw significant attention as they progress, especially given the serious nature of the allegations against Norton.
