A Florida man, renowned within his community for portraying Santa Claus during festive events, has been arrested on serious charges related to human trafficking and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor. The suspect, identified as 68-year-old Thomas Allen Hicks, is under investigation following an undercover operation conducted by local law enforcement.

According to records from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Hicks is accused of attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl. The allegations came to light after law enforcement officers initiated an undercover sting, posing as individuals seeking to connect with those interested in illegal activities.

The investigation began when authorities posted an advertisement on a website known for prostitution services. Hicks allegedly responded to this ad, engaging in conversation with an undercover officer who was posing as a man offering his fictitious daughter for sexual services. A photograph that had been digitally altered to appear as though it depicted a younger woman was used in the advertisement, police reported.
During the exchange, Hicks reportedly reacted with surprise when informed that the individual he was communicating with was only 13 years old, stating, “Wow, I didn’t know she was so young.” However, despite his initial surprise, he proceeded to inquire multiple times whether the situation was a setup. Nevertheless, he indicated a willingness to proceed, allegedly agreeing to pay $200 for an hour of the encounter.
Upon his arrest, officers discovered Hicks in possession of $382 in cash, which included two $100 bills. Following his detention, authorities questioned him regarding his intentions. Hicks reportedly acknowledged awareness that the ad referred to an underage girl and admitted that he should have ceased communication once he realised this. However, he expressed uncertainty about whether he would have followed through with the encounter if the girl had been real.
In addition to the charges of engaging in human trafficking services, Hicks faces three other criminal counts. Court records reveal a troubling insight into his personal life; while he has been married for over 50 years, he confessed to regularly browsing online prostitution sites.
Authorities were able to identify Hicks as a marketing professional working for a behavioural health company. His annual role as Santa Claus in local Christmas events has further highlighted the shocking nature of the allegations against him. Community members, who have known him for years, have expressed disbelief in light of the charges.
As of now, Hicks has not entered a plea regarding the accusations against him. The investigation continues, and he remains in custody as the legal proceedings unfold.
Polk County authorities are committed to combating human trafficking and protecting minors from potential exploitation. The shocking nature of this case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of such crimes and the importance of vigilance within communities.
Further updates on this case are expected as the legal process progresses. Local residents are encouraged to remain informed about developments in the investigation and to be aware of the issues surrounding human trafficking in their area.
