First Grader Saves Choking Classmate Thanks to Lesson He Remembered from Kindergarten: ‘I Knew What To Do’

A seven-year-old boy has been recognised as a hero after he saved his classmate from choking during lunch at Stephen Olney Elementary School in North Providence, Rhode Island. The brave act took place on 9 April, when Sameer Santana noticed his friend, Jabril Brewster, was in distress while eating.

While enjoying their meals, Sameer observed that Jabril was struggling with an apple slice. Although his teacher instructed the class to remain seated while she called for assistance, Sameer took matters into his own hands. With the knowledge he had gained from a kindergarten health lesson, he performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on Jabril without hesitation.

“I remember my lesson clearly, so I knew what to do,” Sameer recounted. He explained to reporters that he applied the Heimlich technique just as he had been taught, and fortunately, the apple dislodged immediately.

The quick thinking of this first grader prevented what could have been a dire situation. After learning about his son’s courageous actions, Ciara Santana, Sameer’s mother, expressed her overwhelming pride. “I received a call from the school and I couldn’t hold back my tears,” she shared. “I had no idea he even knew how to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre.”

Sameer’s selfless response has earned him acclaim, and he was honoured at a special ceremony at his school on 28 April. Attending the event were not only family and friends but also local officials, including the mayor, along with members of the fire and police departments.

Mayor Charlie Lombardi praised Sameer’s bravery, highlighting the importance of his actions. “This is significant, and everyone should recognise what this young man has done and what he represents,” Lombardi remarked. He expressed the hope that Sameer’s exemplary behaviour would inspire other students to take action when faced with emergencies.
