Rita Wilson, the acclaimed actress and producer, recently opened up about her journey with breast cancer, reflecting on her experience and the lessons learned since her diagnosis in 2015. During the event, held at New York City’s 92NY, Wilson recounted a crucial conversation she had with Hanks following her cancer diagnosis. Expressing her desires in the event of her untimely demise, she poignantly stated that she wanted her husband to “be sad for a very, very long time.” However, she balanced this somber request with a heartfelt wish for him to celebrate her life as well. “Throw me a party,” she said, illustrating her desire for a joyful remembrance filled with stories and laughter.

The actress underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after her diagnosis, a decision she did not take lightly. Reflecting on the emotional turbulence that the diagnosis brought, Wilson explained, “When you get the diagnosis, you’re like, ‘I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but I hope I’m still here in a few years.’” This uncertainty led her to write the song “Throw Me a Party,” co-authored with Liz Rose and Kristian Bush, as a tribute to her journey and outlook on life.
In a previous Instagram post from 2019, Wilson had labelled her cancer diagnosis as an unsettling experience that filled her with fear and anxiety. Despite this, she maintained a sense of humour in articulating her wishes for Hanks, mixing solemnity with celebration. “If anything happens, I wanted him to be super sad for a very long time, and I’d also like a party,” she shared, highlighting the blend of grief and celebration she envisioned.
As she marked ten years of being cancer-free on March 31, Wilson expressed immense gratitude through an emotional Instagram video. “It’s a celebration for me,” she proclaimed, recognising the milestone as a significant achievement in her battle against cancer. She thanked her doctors, friends, and family for their unwavering support throughout her journey, adding that the experience has not always been easy.
“I think it’s important to celebrate good news,” Wilson stated, acknowledging that her journey has had its ups and downs. She emphasised her thoughts and prayers for those who are currently struggling with their health, inspiring others to remain hopeful.
Importance of early diagnosis and second opinions was also a crucial part of Wilson’s message. Reflecting on her experience, she revealed that she had been living with lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) and had been vigilant with regular check-ups. However, after a series of biopsies indicated more serious findings, she sought a second opinion, which ultimately confirmed an invasive diagnosis. Emphasising the necessity of seeking an additional perspective, she firmly stated, “You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen.”
Wilson, now 69, married Hanks in 1988, and their mutual support through tumultuous times has become a hallmark of their relationship. As her new album approaches its release on May 1, Wilson’s recent remarks serve to highlight not only her resilience but also her commitment to raising awareness about breast cancer and the emotional intricacies of dealing with serious health issues.
As she continues her work in the entertainment industry, Wilson’s story stands as a testimony to both the challenges faced and the triumphs achieved in the realm of health and wellness. Through her music and public discourse, she aims to empower others to navigate their health journeys with both strength and vulnerability, fostering a supportive dialogue around cancer and its impact on both individuals and families.
