Fifth Grader Saves Mom After She Has a Stroke During a 10K: ‘I’ve Never Been Called a Hero’

A ten-year-old girl from Modesto, California, has been hailed a hero by her community after she demonstrated remarkable composure during a life-threatening incident involving her mother. Leilani Cienega was participating in her school’s annual 10K race when her mother, Manuela Armenta, collapsed due to a minor stroke.

The incident unfolded on 14 March during the event known as “10K with a Cop,” which encourages students to engage in physical activity while building relationships with local law enforcement. Although Leilani was initially excited about the prospect of winning a medal, her focus quickly shifted when her mother became unwell shortly after the race had commenced. Armenta experienced blurry vision and, feeling her knees weaken, fell to the ground.

Expressing the panic any parent might feel, Armenta recalled her immediate thoughts were for her daughter, fearing for Leilani’s safety. “I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, what’s going to happen to her?’” she said, illustrating the perilous moment. Even in this distressing situation, Leilani remained calm.

In a moment of quick thinking, Leilani took decisive action to ensure her mother received help. “I didn’t know what to do, so I just encouraged myself to think of the first thing you should do,” she recounted. The young girl called her brother, relaying information about their mother’s condition and the hospital they were headed to. Throughout the ordeal, she stayed close to her mother, communicating with passers-by until paramedics arrived.

Upon their arrival, the first responders commended Leilani for her remarkable behaviour under pressure. “They were like, ‘Oh my God, you’re behaving so well, honey. We’re proud of you,’” Armenta shared, highlighting her daughter’s bravery in a situation that would have frightened many adults.

Fortunately, doctors diagnosed Armenta with a small stroke, and despite sustaining a knee injury from the fall, her prognosis is optimistic. As she recuperates in a wheelchair, she reassured, “The stroke didn’t affect me at all because it was a small stroke.” Medical professionals have conveyed that the situation could have been considerably worse had Leilani not acted so swiftly.

In recognition of her courage, Leilani was surprised with an assembly at Sinclear Elementary School, attended by her family, teachers, and the community, including the paramedics who aided her mother. “She didn’t know anything about it. She was surprised, like, ‘What are you guys doing here?’” Armenta described the surprise celebration, which brought together those who wanted to honour the fifth grader’s bravery.

The Ceres Unified School District publicly celebrated Leilani’s heroism through a social media announcement. They expressed their gratitude that Armenta is recovering and commended Leilani, stating, “Leilani, you are proof that heroes come in all sizes!” This sentiment encapsulates the impact the young girl’s actions had on the community.

“I felt happy and surprised,” Leilani remarked, reflecting on her unexpected recognition. “It makes me feel powerful and happy because I’ve never been called a hero.” Her story serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength that can emerge from even the youngest individuals during critical moments.
